Wayne Weaver is in a reflective mood these days, and not just because of the new year. ?After 18 years as the only owner the?Jacksonville Jaguars?have known, Weaver will hand the franchise to Illinois businessman Shahid Khan on Jan. 4. The occasion prompted him Friday to?share his memories with the team?s official website, and the?New York Giants? front office might take note of what Weaver had to say about their coach, Tom Coughlin. ?Read more after the jump.

?If hindsight you could change, I?ll be honest with you: I probably would have never changed Coughlin,? said Weaver, who fired the coach after the 2002 season. ?I would have tried to have Tom take a step back and just be the coach. I thought about it, but I didn?t think Tom would do it. I thought Tom?s pride would never allow him to take a step back and me take the general manager?s position and all power and say, ?Go coach the football team.? He did that in New York, but I thought it would hurt his pride too much.?
It?s no wonder Weaver feels so warmly about Coughlin: He?s the most successful expansion coach in recent NFL history.
Coughlin had a 68-60 record in eight seasons at the helm in Jacksonville, made two appearances in the AFC Championship Game (including one in the team?s second season of play) and is the only coach in league history to lead an expansion team to the playoffs in four of its first five seasons. (Coughlin?s replacement, Jack Del Rio, had just two playoff appearances between 2003 and 2011 and never made it past the divisional round.)
?My three short-list names I had narrowed it down to were (Mike) Shanahan, (Tony) Dungy and Tom,? Weaver said. ?I hired Tom because I felt he was more autocratic and I felt that not knowing anything about this business I needed somebody where I could say, ?You set the stage here. You build the platform we have to build this franchise around.?
?I felt he would be the best guy to do it and, as it turned out, he was the best guy to do it. We had tremendous success. Our draft choices were probably better than the average team at the time. That was Tom?s work ethic. He was very involved and he was a good evaluator. He held people accountable to develop those players.?
Coughlin landed in New York in 2004 and won the Super Bowl in his fourth season as the Giants? coach. But he missed the playoffs in 2009 and 2010, and now faces aSunday game against the Dallas?Cowboys?that he must win to avoid that fate for a third consecutive time. A loss could put Coughlin?s job in peril, coincidentally after eight seasons.
As for the Jaguars, they haven?t been to the playoffs since 2007. So what advice did Weaver give Khan to change that?
?What you have to do is draft well and get the right coach,? Weaver said. ?That?s what I said to him.?

SANAA, Yemen -- The son of Yemen's outgoing president is leading a crackdown to purge the Republican Guard, which he commands, of any rebellious officers found to be siding with anti-government protesters, a military official said Saturday.
The Republican Guard is a pillar of the regime of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and the attempts to ensure it remains loyal point to an effort to keep the regime from unraveling in the wake of a deal for Saleh to transfer power after 33 years as president.
His son, Ahmed, has had dozens of members of the powerful military force arrested so far, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
The Republican Guard has helped Saleh maintain power despite 10 months of protests, intense international pressure and an assassination attempt in June that forced him to leave the country for medical treatment in neighboring Saudi Arabia.
The Guard, one of the best trained elements of Yemen's military, has not suffered a high number of defections like some other military units whose soldiers and commanders left to join the protest movement.
But with more frequent and serious acts of rebellion breaking out in other parts of the security services, the Guard's commanders are moving to prevent their ranks from doing the same.
The official said Ahmed warned at a Guard meeting over the past week against "copying" the actions of others. They are searching units, barracks, and have banned the use of cell phones inside the camp, the official said.
"We will not permit copying here. Force will be the way to deal with any protest," the official quoted Saleh's son as saying.
Some renegade units in other parts of the military have even locked their commanders out of military installations and demanded the removal of officers accused of corruption or involvement in the deadly crackdown on protesters.
In a significant concession, the defense minister ordered the removal of a longtime Saleh confident within the armed forces, Ali al-Shater, known as one of the regime's strongmen. Protests by subordinates accused al-Shater of corruption and using his connections with the president to illegally amass wealth.
Another sweep in search of rebellious soldiers took place within the ranks of the Central Security forces, led by Saleh's nephew, Yahia, according to a Central Security official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secretive nature of the security measures.
Hundreds of men in military uniform marched on Saturday through the southern city of Taiz, a center of the uprising, calling for trials of top commanders over the killings of unarmed protesters in the regime's crackdown
Labor protests have also swept Yemen since Saleh signed the power transfer deal last month. The deal, brokered by Yemen's neighbors on the Arabian Peninsula, grants him immunity from prosecution in return for stepping down.
He transferred power to his vice president and said he will leave the country and travel to the United States, though Washington has yet to say if he would be granted a visa.
The pact has failed to end street protests, however, because many still want to see Saleh stand trial.
On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of protesters held demonstrations in the capital city of Sanaa and in several other cities and vowed to stop Saleh from leaving the country.

Cee Lo Green came under fire from John Lennon fans on Twitter after tweaking the lyrics to the song "Imagine" during his New Year's Eve performance.
From the Huffington Post:Charged with singing Lennon's famous solo-era tune on NBC's New Year's Eve show shortly before the ball dropped in Times Square , Green changed the lyrics from "Nothing to kill or die for, And no religion too" to "Nothing to kill or die for, And all religion's true." The change didn't go unnoticed, and to preempt criticism, he soon tweeted, "Yo I meant no disrespect by changing the lyric guys! I was trying to say a world were u could believe what u wanted that's all."That apparently didn't mollify angry Lennon (and "no religion") fans, who kept up the Twitter fire.

The Washington Post reports Union Square, an area known for holding demonstrations, will no longer be controlled by the National Park Service. The Capitol Police would now control the Square and be in control of awarding permits for rallies or events.
Mara Verheyden-Hilliard of the Washington-based Partnership for Civil Justice, which the Post says ?advocates for protest groups,? is extremely troubled by this development.
The Park Service rules and obligations on First Amendment activities have been forged by 40 years of very intense litigation?The Capitol Police?.?.?.?permitting system, I would have to say in my own experience?.?.?.?is perhaps among the most arbitrary and restrictive?If they?re going to be expanding their jurisdiction out into areas that have been used historically by people, they are inviting litigation.
The decision to transfer is allegedly a result of ?security-driven issues.? The Senate?s chief law enforcement officer, Terrance W. Gainer, scoffed at the idea that this would have any bearing on protests. But, if Verheyden-Hilliard experience suggests what lies ahead for those trying to exercise their First Amendment rights in Union Square from this point forward, there could be problems.
An Occupy Congress action is scheduled for January 17, 2012, outside Capitol Hill. It has been reported, also by?the Post, that a permit application was submitted to the Park Service. So, it would seem the Capitol Police will now have power over this demonstration when it happens on January 17. (Whether they would be in charge of approving a permit or not for this event is unclear).
