Teach an old dog new tricks: Austin Pets Alive! gives city's animals a ...

For many, visiting an animal shelter is an unpleasant experience. Animals are often cramped and frantic, waiting to be saved from an imminent death. But the scene at Austin Pets Alive! (APA) is markedly different: classical music plays over a loudspeaker, animals romp together in guided play groups, while others lounge in their kennels, awaiting a pleasant?volunteer-led walk.

At APA, animals have a future, and the sense of safety is evident in the calm environment.

As recently as 2007, more than 14,000 animals were euthanized in Austin per year. Most were healthy, many were full grown, and the majority of the animals that were sick could have been cured. Beginning in 2008, APA stepped in to work with the city shelter to save those animals ? the dogs and cats that were more fit for a family home than a crowded kennel. Owing in part to APA's commitment to that mission, the city of Austin now boasts a 90 percent save-rate, and the organization single-handedly saved 6,000 animals just last year.

At any given time, two-thirds of the animals that APA has rescued from city shelters are housed with foster parents. Those fosters take it upon themselves to find those animals a permanent home. The other third of the animals reside at the APA Town Lake shelter, which is also home to APA's surgery center, offices and specialized wards.

For example, an entire facility,?Dazey's Ward, is devoted to cats with ringworm, a condition that's curable but would immediately send them to the euthanization list at a city shelter. At APA, almost all of these cats are adopted.

"It just goes to show that we have so many preconceived notions about what people will deal with as adopters," says Executive Director Ellen Jefferson. "I think as animal welfare people, we've given animals the short end of the stick by not letting people make that decision. You never know who's going to fall in love with a ringworm cat, for instance. It's not about whatever is wrong with [the animal], it's about the relationship."

Other laudable programs include the Parvo Ward, Bottle Baby Nursery, Louie's Fresh Start Program, the APA Medical Clinic and Barn Cat Placements.

The APA operation is a legitimate labor of love for its staff and volunteers. They believe in connecting with the heart of the animal and the capacity for rehabilitation; they truly give these animals a chance, and with each adoption, the fruit of their compassionate labor shines.

Each week, CultureMap will feature an APA animal ready to be placed in a permanent, loving home: dog or cat, big or small. We will tell you about the animal's personality and unique traits and, most of all, encourage you to meet one another. And if you're not ready to parent, there are a plethora of ways to get involved as a volunteer. You might be surprised by who emerges as your new best friend (and roommate).

Austin Pets Alive! will present Austin's No Kill Anniversary Party on February 24. Tickets are available online.

Reproductive workings of a harvester ant dynasty

Feb. 12, 2013 ? Ants are just about everywhere you look, and yet it's largely unknown how they manage to be so ubiquitous. Scientists have understood the carnal mechanism of ant reproduction, but until now have known little of how successful the daughters of a colony are when they attempt to found new colonies.

For the first time, Stanford biologists have been able to identify specific parent ants and their own children in wild ant colonies, making it possible to study reproduction trends.

And in a remarkable display of longevity, an original queen ant was found to be producing new ants several decades after mating, sending out daughter queens throughout her 20- to 30-year lifespan.

"Most animals produce offspring for a while, and then they enter a life stage where they don't," Gordon said. "These queen ants are mating once, storing that sperm in a special sac, keeping it alive and using it to fertilize eggs for another 25 years."

From an ecological viewpoint, an ant colony is much like a tree putting out seeds, with the potential to create new trees. An ant queen produces genetically identical worker ants that live in the same colony, and also produces sons, and daughter queens. The daughter queens, after mating, establish new colonies of their own.

Deborah Gordon, a biology professor at Stanford and a senior fellow at the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, has been studying a particular population of harvester ant colonies in southeastern Arizona for 28 years, meticulously recording when a new colony rises or an older one falls.

Gordon's group took the DNA fingerprint of each colony by analyzing a section of microsatellite, or "junk," DNA to identify which colonies were related. By pairing the genetic analysis with the long-term observations, Gordon was able to determine the original queen and colony, and the order in which the daughter queens and subsequent generations established new colonies.

The researchers also found that only about 25 percent of the colonies reproduce at all, and many of the daughter queens are not successful. The entire population -- the study group consisted of about 300 colonies -- relies on just a few queens to make most of the offspring year after year.

"We don't know whether all harvester ant populations always behave this way, or whether these trends hold true for all 11,000 ant species, because nobody has identified colony offspring before," Gordon said. "This gives us new insight on how ant populations change over time."

In general, ants play an important role in agriculture around the world, with some helping to disperse seeds while others eat herbivorous insects. Understanding how populations of ant colonies reproduce and expand, and the rate at which they do so, could be useful in managing invasive ant species, predicting crop yields and understanding the ecology of tropical forests.

"If you're trying to understand how a population grows -- say, you are trying to keep a population of lions going -- the first thing you need to know is how many lionesses you have, and how many cubs they have and can support per year," Gordon said. "For ecological purposes, it's very useful to be able to say how ant populations will grow. This is the first step toward understanding how to predict numbers of ant colonies."

The study was published Jan. 31 in the online version of the Journal of Animal Ecology.

Raspbmc 1.0 brings stable media center duties to your Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi

After a year of effort the Raspbmc team announced it has reached the 1.0 milestone. This means the team is confident they've delivered a stable distro to run the port of XBMC specifically designed to run on the Raspberry Pi, created by TeamXBMC, and the image is ready to be downloaded for free and copied to your ready and able SD card. If you were already enjoying the fruits of the early builds of Raspbmc, you'll need to do a complete re-install but that shouldn't be too much trouble since you probably store your content on a network drive or external USB.

Raspbmc 1.0 is based on the recently finished XMBC 12 Final and supports DTS decoding in software. This is in addition to many other codecs supported in software and you can purchase licenses from the Raspberry Pi Store for MPEG-2 and VC-1 hardware decoding for just a few bucks. A good move, since hardware decoding of today's most popular video codecs is almost certainly a requirement for any proper XBMC setup. Now, if the Raspbmc team would release their own custom case for the RPi then everyone would know what's going on just by looking under your TV.

Eagles appoint new coach

Former Canadian international Srdjan Djekanovic is the new head coach of the Kwantlen Eagles men?s soccer team.

A native of Belgrade, Serbia and a B.C. resident for close to 20 years, Djekanovic played for provincial teams in the under-14, under-15 and under-17 age groups, and was selected to play for Canada at the under-20 and senior levels.

He was the starting goaltender for the UBC Thunderbirds when the team won CIS (Canadian Intercollegiate Sports) championships in 2005 and 2007, and earnied second-team all-Canadian honours in 2006.

As a professional, he became the first player to have played for all three Canadian teams (Vancouver Whitecaps, Toronto FC and Montreal Impact)

?As a student-athlete, professional athlete and coach, Srdjan brings a vast amount of experience to the Eagles, which is a great asset for our players in their development,? said Elise Le Brun, director, athletics and recreation at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. ?His passion for the game and his firm belief in the importance of lifelong learning makes him a great fit for KPU?s Eagles program.?

Since 2009, Srdjan has held the role of assistant coach with the UBC men?s team, winning another national title in 2012.

He has also served as head coach of several youth teams, and is the director and head coach of Primo Sports Soccer Academy.

?I am excited to join KPU?s athletics program,? said Djekanovic, a teacher in the Coquitlam School District. ?I look forward to working with the players to make the Eagles men?s soccer program one of the top programs in the country.?

The Eagles were 6-5-3 (won-tied-lost) in the PACWEST (Pacific Western Athletic Association) league last season, placing fourth among eight teams.

BlackBerry shares drop as Home Depot switches to iPhone

TORONTO (Reuters) - Shares of BlackBerry fell 3 percent on Monday after U.S. home improvement retailer Home Depot Inc said it is replacing the BlackBerry smartphones it provides its executives and managers with Apple Inc's iPhone.

The news is a setback for BlackBerry as it fights to retain its base of big corporate clients and government agencies. The recent launch of a revamped line of smartphones powered by its reengineered BlackBerry 10 operating system was a crucial step in that effort.

BlackBerry, which is changing its legal name from Research In Motion Ltd, unveiled two new devices - a full touch-screen smartphone dubbed the Z10 and a more traditional physical keyboard version named Q10 - at a launch event in New York on January 30.

The company hopes the make-or-break new line will help it win back market share ceded in recent years to the likes of Apple and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, whose Galaxy line is powered by Google Inc's market-leading Android operating system.

The news of Home Depot's defection sent BlackBerry shares 3.8 percent lower to $15.86 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq on Monday, overshadowing media reports that its Z10 device made a strong debut in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday. Since their unveiling, the devices have been well received in Britain and Canada. The all-important U.S. debut comes next month.

Stephen Holmes, a spokesman for Home Depot, confirmed an earlier report on the Apple Insider blog site that the retailer was issuing iPhones to almost 10,000 executives, managers and corporate staffers who currently use the BlackBerry.

He declined to say when the company had begun this process, and whether the decision was made before or after the launch of the new BlackBerry 10.

"We are replacing the current base of BlackBerry technology with iPhone, but these are not the mobile devices used in our stores," Holmes said.

The Apple Insider report said the move would have no impact on the 60,000 rugged Motorola smartphones used by Home Depot's store employees. Those devices provide mobile point-of-sale, analytical, walkie-talkie and traditional telephony services.

BlackBerry declined to comment directly on Home Depot's move, but in an email said it is seeing strong demand for its new Z10.

"We have over 2,700 unique businesses in North America already registered for our BlackBerry 10 Ready Program," Amy McDowell, a spokeswoman for the company, said. "We are confident that BlackBerry is, and will continue to be, the best solution for corporations managing large smartphone deployments."

BlackBerry's Toronto-listed shares were down 3.2 percent at C$15.98 at 1:30 p.m. ET (1830 GMT).
