Flirty Facebook Post Sparks 30-WOMAN BRAWL in Sacramento

An ill-advised Facebook comment allegedly led to a 30-woman brawl involving baseball bats, a smashed glass candle crudely wielded as a weapon, and resulting in two serious injuries in Sacramento, Calif., this week.

Officer Michele Gigante of the Sacramento Police said a post on one man's Facebook page was the culprit. His wife allegedly wasn't fond of its salacious nature, which apparently instigated (somehow) a multi-woman showdown.

FB fight

Cops claim that Facebook played a role beyond the man flirting with another woman besides his wife. Some participants used FB to organize the fight.

The participants looked "angry and out of breath," according to one eyewitness, who adds that several individuals were hurt after the epic melee.

One imagines that things like this never used to happen. But of course they did. They just didn't benefit from the virtual megaphone and fine organizational possibilities offered to breathlessly angry mobs by Facebook's mere existence.

Thank you, Mark Zuckerberg. Thank you.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball Kicks Off Amid Protests

Seoul, South Korea, set list heavy on new material, but Gaga's biggest hits come out to play.
By John Mitchell

Lady Gaga kicked off her hotly awaited Born This Way Ball at Seoul, South Korea's Olympic Stadium on Friday (April 27) in front of 45,000 fans, and despite protests from Christian groups saying Mother Monster was "obscene" and could "taint" young people with her performance, the concert appears to have gone on without incident.

Intrepid Twitter fans are already showing off pictures and video of the BTW Ball's enormous Gothic castle backdrop and myriad costume changes, making it clear that Gaga has outdone even her own Monster Ball in terms of spectacle.

While we wait for reviews to trickle in from halfway around the world, one thing is certain: No minors were corrupted at the show. Earlier this month, the Korea Media Rating Board decided to elevate the age rating for the concert from 12 to 18, prohibiting minors from seeing the concert. When the board notified Gaga's tour promotion company and a sponsor of the change in age restrictions, it did not offer a reason why the show — which at the time was still in rehearsals and has not been reviewed publicly — was considered unsuitable for children under 18.

The likely catalyst for the board's decision came more into focus as the concert neared and protests from a group of conservative Christians calling itself the Alliance for Sound Culture in Sexuality ramped up. The group covered Seoul with posters accusing Gaga of "spreading unhealthy sexual culture" through "lewd lyrics and performances."

The superstar and her fans, however, were undeterred. Though she tweeted her hopes that the Korea Media Rating Board would reverse its decision (it didn't), she continued on as planned. Many fans reportedly arrived at the show wearing versions of Gaga's most well-known flamboyant costumes, and there have been no reports of disturbances at the concert.

Before the show, Gaga tweeted, "I can you hear you Korea. I'm shaking."

Gaga's performance was heavy on material from her Born this Way album, though her biggest hits, including "Bad Romance," Poker Face" and "Just Dance," were represented.

Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball set list:

» "Highway Unicorn"
» "Government Hooker"
» "Born This Way"
» "Bloody Mary"
» "Bad Romance"
» "Fashion of His Love"
» "The Queen"
» "Just Dance"
» "Love Game"
» "Telephone"
» "Just Dance"
» "Heavy Metal Lover"
» "Bad Kids"
» "Hair"
» "Yoü and I"
» "Electric Chapel"
» "Americano"
» "Poker Face"
» "Scheiße"
» "The Edge of Glory"
» "Marry the Night"

Frame rate debate rages on with 48 fps projection of 3D Hobbit footage

Image

With his use of Red cameras, 3ality rigs, and high frame rate 3D technology, no one can accuse Peter Jackson of being stuck in the past. Need more evidence of his anti-luddism? He just gave the first projection of footage from his 3D opus "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in its full 48 fps glory at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. With the public having endured 80 years of 24 fps film-watching, Jackson appealed to viewers to allow their eyes to adjust to the doubled rate during the ten minute screening. But the reaction showed that public acceptance might take a while. One projectionist compared it to made-for-TV fare, and others referenced Mexican soap-operas and TruMotion. The reply to these criticisms by Jackson (and James Cameron) has always been that 3D is better suited to faster frame rates than 2D -- making it more immersive, reducing headaches and improving stereoscopy. We'll have to wait for the film's release this December to find out whether he's right, or if this attempt at high frame speeds will go the way of Showscan.

NASA READIs early detection GPS network, aids first responders with earthquake warnings

Image

After tacking space shuttle Discovery onto the back of a 747, the brainy gang over at NASA's READI for a new challenge -- earthquake detection. The agency's GPS-monitoring system, known as the Real-time Earthquake Analysis for Disaster Mitigation Network, is being tested with the goal of more accurately detecting the scale of quakes and, consequently, getting tsunami warnings out as soon as possible. The setup, made possible by a partnership between the Department of Defense, the National Space Foundation, and the United States Geological Survey, works by measuring ground displacement in real-time to provide a faster, more detailed assessment of imminent damage, thereby giving first responders a head start on determining aid. So the next time you look up to the night sky and wish upon a tracking star, keep in mind that sometimes privacy-skewing, positioning tech could just save your life.

Tim Cook hates litigation, not quite ready to call a patent truce

Tim Cook hates litigation, not quite ready to call a patent truce

Tired of the ongoing patent wars? Well, Tim Cook gave us some reason to hope. In response to a question about the potential for settlements in the current pile of lawsuits on the company's plate, the CEO seemed open to the idea. In fact, he used the "h" word to describe is feelings towards the process. "I've always hated litigation. I continue to hate it," he said, before striking a slightly more combative tone to clarify, "I just want people to invent their own stuff." So there you go, stop stealing Apple's inventions and its lawyers won't sue. Seems simple enough. The urge to avoid further legal tussles seems genuine though, saying that, if an acceptable agreement could be struck he'd "highly prefer to settle rather than battle."

ASUS has began pushing out an update for the Eee Pad Transformer (TF101) today, and the change log is online chock full of the things users really wanted it to be chock full of. In case you're not up to snuff on the state of ICS for the original Transformer, some users are having issues with random reboots since getting the OTA to Android 4. It's not one of those things that affects everyone, which makes it that much harder to troubleshoot, but hopefully ASUS has a handle on it with today's news. There's other goodies there as well -- check it.

Atlantic Business Continuity Services: Getting Ready for Hurricane ...

Don't Let the Predictions Change your Preparations!

As we approach the beginning of another Hurricane Season on June 1, we start to hear a lot of predictions.?? Will it be an average year, below average, or above average?? How many storms are we likely to see?? While these are interesting questions, we need to guard against getting caught up in these news headlines.?? One only has to think back twenty years to 1992, a year that was predicted as ?below average? and indeed only saw 6 named storms.? Unfortunately for Southern Florida, the first named storm in this ?below average? year was Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm that was the costliest hurricane in US history at the time.?

The lesson that we should take from that 1992 hurricane season is simple: don?t let the predictions change your preparations!? ?Hurricane Andrew taught us to always be on our guard during hurricane season, no matter what the predictions say.? ?The good news is that planning for hurricanes is one of the simplest threats to address in your business continuity plan.? There is a predictable season for these storms and there are generally good forecasts available to announce a storm?s arrival with plenty of time to put plans into action.?

The time to update or begin your hurricane plan is now, before the season begins.? Some of the issues that need to be addressed in your plan may take time to investigate and resolve, so give yourself plenty of time and start now.? Here are a few items to consider to get started:

Employees ? get everyone?s emergency contact info, local and out-of-state, and ask each employee where they plan to go during an evacuation.? Help them start planning for their families and homes.

Customers ? ask them about their expectations from your business before, during, and after a hurricane so you can address these issues and plan to meet their needs

Building ? identify who is responsible for securing and boarding up your building and when the building will be shut down and re-opened following an evacuation

Go Kits ? ask all employees to mark the items in their offices that are critical to performing their job duties, so others can pack up these items if they are not present during an evacuation

Policies ? determine how you will pay employees during office closures due to storms (PTO, sick, vacation, or special ?emergency? pay?)

Alternate Site ? identify an alternate location to conduct business if you can?t return to your primary location, and make sure your employees are willing and able to work from that alternate location

Insurance ? make sure your current policy covers flood damage to your contents, has business income and additional expense coverage, and covers the current replacement value of your assets

Technology ? determine how phones will be forwarded, how emails will be received, and how important files and systems will be accessed remotely during an evacuation and long-term recovery at another location

These are just a few of the items to consider to get started.? Remember the golden rule to business continuity planning: the best plan is the one with the most options.? Make sure you have multiple contact phone numbers, multiple alternate locations to work from, multiple copies of critical data and documents, multiple people cross-trained to perform critical functions, and so on.? In doing so you will not only develop a good hurricane plan for your business, but you will build the foundation for a good business continuity plan for all other threats to your business.?

Remember, don?t let the predictions change your preparations and get ready for hurricane season now.? Feel free to contact us with questions or if you need help starting your plan.
