Can a shiny new smartphone undo years of lackluster performance?

BlackBerry is sure hoping so.

In recent years, BlackBerry has lost a lot of customers and slashed a lot of jobs, including positions at its U.S. headquarters based in Irving.

A spokesman told WFAA.com that the company ?hadn?t listened to the market and what people were telling us they want out of smartphones."

But on Wednesday, BlackBerry got "smart."

Calling it "the start of a new era of mobile computing,? CEO Thorsten Heins officially unveiled a new smartphone the company hopes can compete with the likes of the iPhone and Android handsets.

?It's quite a lot like an iPhone, except with a larger screen and it's very fast," said industry analyst Peter Misek with Jefferies and Co.

BlackBerry could use more beneficial reviews like that one. The success of its new Z10 model is deemed critical to the troubled company's future.

It's equally important to the city of Irving, where BlackBerry is a Top 50 employer, providing around 500 jobs ? mainly higher wage positions in research and development and legal services.

The company ? which officially changed its name Wednesday from Research in Motion to BlackBerry ? also directly contributes about $700,000 annually to the city and school district tax base.

Following the BlackBerry Z10 unveiling, there was a much less flashy announcement. A spokesman from the Irving Chamber of Commerce told WFAA.com by phone that BlackBerry has indicated it may expand its North Texas workforce by as much as 10 percent, another 50 jobs.

A spokesman from BlackBerry, which just added some local positions in December 2012, wouldn?t confirm the company?s future hiring plans.

Good Reads: Mexico City cleans up, avoiding 'truth,' and a rare visit to North Korea

This week's good reads include Mexico City's bike-sharing and walkways, the gap between information and understanding, outsourcing personal chores, and a young American's insights on the 'hermit kingdom.'

Mexico City has long had a dark cloud hovering over it ? both literally and figuratively ? when it comes to traffic woes and vehicle emissions. As recently as 2011, residents of Mexico?s vibrant capital city reported ?enduring the most painful commute,? according to a report in National Geographic. ?Based on factors such as roadway traffic, stress levels, and commute times, the city scored worse than 19 cities, including Beijing, China, and Nairobi, Kenya.?

So it might come as a surprise that this megacity, home to 20 million people and more than 4 million vehicles, was recently selected to receive the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy?s Sustainable Transport Award.

National Geographic describes Mexico City?s progress, noting that over the past two years the city has taken great strides to become more pedestrian-friendly with car-free walkways and plazas, new bus lines, a bike-sharing program, and a system of parking meters.

Sure, traffic still exists and air quality isn?t perfect, but anyone who has been to the bustling metropolis knows the hurdles the city has had to confront and what great progress must have been made to entitle it to an award of this sort.

Avoiding the truth

?In the three or four decades after 1490, the human experience on planet Earth arguably changed more than it had since the Year One,? writes Todd S. Purdum in Vanity Fair. And the life-altering changes that took place ? from international exploration connecting the Eastern and Western Hemispheres for the first time to the creation of movable type ? may have been the most revolutionary years civilization has seen. Until now.

?[W]e know almost everything? today, Mr. Purdum notes. That?s thanks in part to a second round of radical change that started a few short decades ago and continues in full force. Changes such as the ?ricochets? of money and people around the world, and the simplification of information sharing via the Internet. But our newfound knowledge and interconnectivity doesn?t necessarily mean we understand our environment or ?The Truths? that confront us.

Unlike our forefathers ? who may not have had enough information to understand that the ?sweating sickness? (malaria) that suddenly plagued coastal England was linked to the slave trade, or who couldn?t foresee that the printing press might also launch freethinking and religious wars ? we aren?t in the dark. We have overwhelming amounts of information that wash over us daily that we can?t seem to process.

Consider the lasting debate over global warming, despite the volumes of real-time proof.

?Fixed cameras can capture the melting of glaciers through time-lapse photography, but they can?t quell the doubts of climate-change deniers,? Purdum offers as one example.

The chore of no more chores

Have you ever dreamed of coming home from work and having that pile of dirty laundry miraculously washed and folded? Or of having that book that?s been taunting you from your bedside table read in time for your next book club meeting? You, dear reader, are not alone.

?Oh, to be rich and powerful,? Patricia Marx writes in the opening of her New Yorker article ?Outsource yourself: The online way to delegate your chores.? Ms. Marx takes her readers through a humorous journey of ?test driving? the world of online services. There, ?Task Rabbits? (errand runners) and ?virtual personal assistants? can be hired to do everything from writing a brief history of outsourcing in the US for an article (hers) or even to read Proust and come up with insightful musings to impress book club friends (hers again).

There are numerous websites and Internet communities dedicated to outsourced work. But, as you might imagine, Marx?s adventures reveal that after spending time soliciting errand runners for simple tasks and then sifting through bids on these chores, it might just be quicker to do them yourself.

Turn up the heat, North Korea

Sophie Schmidt, daughter of Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt, tagged along in January when her father took part in a nine-person US delegation to North Korea, organized by former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson. Ms. Schmidt, a grad school student, made a number of enlightening observations about the ?hermit kingdom? on her blog, Sophie in North Korea.

In a post titled ?It might not get weirder than this,? Schmidt writes, ?Our trip was a mixture of highly staged encounters, tightly-orchestrated viewings and what seemed like genuine human moments.? She notes under ?Top Level Take-aways? that ?Nothing I?d read or heard beforehand really prepared me for what we saw.? It was also extremely cold and none of the sites they toured ? schools, malls, and government buildings ? were heated, despite frigid temperatures.?

?It is quite extraordinary to have the Honored Guest Experience in such conditions: they?re proudly showing you their latest technology or best library, and you can see your breath. A clue to how much is really in their control.?

Streaming video over temporary networks

Jan. 29, 2013 ? There are extra challenges when accidents occur in hard-to-reach locations such as in a tunnel or impassable mountain terrain where no stable computer networks are found. For the past ten years, however, technology for mobile ad hoc networks that enable rescue workers to communicate with one another or with a command control centre has been available. These networks configure themselves automatically among mobile devices located within a given geographic area.

Video streaming crucial

The ability to stream video from the site of an emergency to the command centre will in many cases be essential. Today, there are a number of quality solutions for mounting cameras to helmets or integrating them into eyewear. While there are thus no longer the same obstacles to recording video, streaming it is another story. Existing mobile ad hoc networks lack the stability and the bandwidth to be reliable for transmitting video.

However, smart phones of today are ubiquitous and have become so powerful that they can be integrated in temporary emergency networks, providing a platform for efficient video transmission.

Developing software for multimedia data

Professor Thomas Plagemann of the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo is heading a research group working with what are known as Delay Tolerant Streaming Services (DT-Stream) systems. This is a type of network that tolerates disruptions and delays, in contrast to the Internet, for example.

Dr Plagemann and the rest of his team have studied what it will take to enable a mobile ad hoc network to manage relatively large amounts of multimedia data, such as video, adequately in emergency and rescue operations.

Can connect to permanent emergency network

Some of the criticism being levied against the new Norwegian emergency network currently under development is that during its initial phase it can not handle either photo files or video. Connecting via a mobile ad hoc network is one possible approach to solving this.

"First and foremost, we are concentrating on transmitting multimedia data over mobile ad hoc networks with an eye to use in emergency and rescue operations in areas with no permanent data infrastructure. Of course, it will also be possible to connect to the Internet or the Norwegian digital communication network for emergency and public safety (N?dnett)," says Dr Plagemann.

From pieces of the puzzle to solution

With funding from the large-scale programme "Core Competence and Value Creation in ICT" (VERDIKT) at the Research Council of Norway, Dr Plagemann's research group has reached the point where they have partial solutions ready for use. The next step is to put these pieces of the puzzle together into a complete application.

The work of Thomas Plagemann's group is drawing attention from research circles around the world. An article summing up the state-of-the-art in video transmission in mobile and ad-hoc networks was at the top of the list of articles downloaded most from the periodical, Multimedia Systems Journal in 2011 and 2012.

Breaking programming rules -- more efficient

One of the solutions developed by the Norwegian researchers came into being as a result of violating some of the classical engineering principles of network programming. Instead, the researchers have utilised a process called cross-layer optimisation.

Network systems today are highly complex. In connection with testing and development, programmers divide them up into separate layers in order to simplify the work. The result is a stack composed of several layers.

The bottom layer is the physical layer, i.e. whether it is a wireless, cable or fibre-optic network. Above this is a data linking layer that transmits bits from one computer to another. On the top is the network layer where operations such as running Internet protocols are carried out.

The rule in network programming is to address only the layer directly beneath the layer being worked on. Dr Plagemann's group has developed middleware that processes all the various layers simultaneously.

"We don't want the applications programmer to have to worry about where the data are being sent or what type of device or operating system is in use. This is all hidden away in our middleware," Thomas Plagemann explains. The middleware reduces data loss in the network, saves energy and improves data-transmission speeds.

Economists feeling more optimistic about 2013

20 hrs.

Economists are increasingly optimistic about growth in the year ahead with hiring expected to pick up in coming months.?

A quarterly survey by the National Association for Business Economists released Monday shows half of the economists polled now expect real gross domestic product ? the value of all goods and services produced in the United States ? to grow between 2 and 4 percent in 2013. That's up from 36 percent of respondents who felt the same way three months earlier.?

About half expect sluggish or negative performance, down from 65 percent in October.?

The latest survey was conducted between Dec. 20 and Jan. 8 and asked 65 economists and others who use economics in the workplace about conditions at their firms or industries. It found that 34 percent of firms now expect to expand their payrolls in the next six months, the highest percentage since April of last year. Meanwhile, 2 percent said they expect their companies to cut payrolls through layoffs, while 14 percent see payrolls trimmed through attrition.?

A quarter of respondents also said employment grew at their firms in the fourth quarter, which is comparable to the levels seen in the first half of 2012. The same percentage also reported a rise in wages at their firms in the final three months of the year, up 10 percentage points from the last survey.?

Overall sales growth was stable in the fourth quarter with results mixed across industries. For instance, growth slowed in the services, finance, insurance and real estate sectors, but rose in the transportation, utilities, information and communications sectors.?

Timothy Gill, chair of NABE's survey committee and director of economics at the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, noted that sales growth was stable despite "widespread uncertainty surrounding the potential impact of the fiscal cliff."?

The "fiscal cliff" refers to the steep tax hikes and spending cuts that were to take effect Jan. 1 unless the White House and Congress reached an agreement to avoid them. The survey found that 27 percent of respondents postponed at least some hiring and capital spending during the quarter as a result, while 72 percent said the issue didn't affect hiring.?

Despite stable sales growth, survey respondents noted that profit margins deteriorated in the fourth quarter, with 25 percent saying their margins increased, down from 27 percent in October. On the flipside, 18 percent reported declining profit margins, compared with 15 percent a year ago. Over the next three months slightly more than a third said they expect primary non-labor costs to rise. That's down from 43 percent in the previous survey.?

Expectations for capital spending over the next year weakened from the last survey. Only 40 percent expect their firms to grow capital spending, down from 52 percent.?

For consumers, the survey suggests modest inflation could be in the works, with two-fifths of respondents ? the highest share over the past year ? saying they expect prices to rise in coming months. Most of those expecting hike prices think the increases will be less than 5 percent.?

His Excellency John Kufuor: Government Support Is Key to Ending Neglected Tropical Diseases

Africa is often the focus of the global development agenda, from HIV/AIDS to economic growth, yet across the continent millions of people are also suffering from a little known group of parasitic and bacterial infections called neglected tropical diseases, or NTDs.

More than one in six people worldwide, including 500 million children, are infected by NTDs -- and half that burden is here in Africa. Often transmitted through insects, water or soil, NTDs blind, starve and disable. They ostracize people from their communities and prevent them from leading productive lives.

These diseases are called "neglected" for a reason -- despite their impact, they have always been considered secondary health priorities, behind better-known diseases like tuberculosis and malaria.

This is curious because NTDs are easy to treat and prevent, and nearly all of the drugs to fight them have been donated by pharmaceutical companies, which makes them some of the most cost-effective medical solutions available today. Providing pills once a year can treat and protect against several of these diseases at once for approximately $0.50 per person.

For those suffering and at risk, a change has been long overdue -- and I am proud to say that in the past year, that change has come.

One year ago, in an unprecedented display of partnership around these diseases, the global health community -- donor and NTD-endemic country governments, non-governmental organizations, pharmaceutical companies, global health organizations and others -- united to end NTDs as a threat to the world's poorest people.

Launching the landmark London Declaration on NTDs, they pledged to work together to reach the World Health Organization's targets to control and eliminate 10 NTDs by 2020.

This month marks the first anniversary of that commitment -- and a recently released report marking that occasion underscores just how far we've come. Authored by the endorsers of the London Declaration, the report tracks our substantial progress in expanding drug supply and the rise of partnerships in expanding crucial disease treatment efforts.

To me, the most heartening part of the report is that there is great progress in so many sectors. Pharmaceuticals donated almost 200 million more treatments for worm-based diseases like roundworm and elephantiasis. The United States and United Kingdom continued to increase their support, and the emergence of the END Fund galvanized private donations from new sectors.

Most importantly, more NTD-affected countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America, are designing and launching integrated plans that allow governments to align objectives and make the best use of their resources. The full commitment of national governments to the principles of the London Declaration is a key element to success. Four countries launched these programs last year, and 40 more developed plans.

WHO has also released its Second Report on Neglected Tropical Diseases, highlighting similar themes about the need for partnership and country commitment and detailing the steps necessary to address each disease. In the next few days, WHO's executive board is likely to consider a resolution calling on all countries to support the 2020 goals -- a critical next step to attract the world's attention and resources.

While results so far have been impressive, more needs to be done. Research and development into new ways of treating, preventing and diagnosing NTDs still has far to go: a lack of adequate diagnostics delays the elimination of lymphatic filariasis in some areas; and a long, risky treatment regimen makes eliminating sleeping sickness more difficult. Along with a global annual funding gap of $300 million, there are still inadequate human resource and technical capacities.

I know that the path is not always easy. Ghana, my home country, suffers from five of these diseases, and as recently as 1989 recorded nearly 190,000 cases of Guinea worm. In 2007, we committed ourselves to eliminating several NTDs -- and with strong political commitment, increased resources and international support, we conquered blinding trachoma in 2009 and Guinea worm in 2011. Ghana's work continues, but its future is bright.

There is no silver bullet remedy to helping a country break the cycle of poverty, but investing in the health of its population offers one of the best options for unlocking economic potential. With full support both from national governments and from the global community, we can build on this year's progress and put an end to NTDs on the African continent.

The author is the former president of Ghana (2001-2009) and the NTD Special Envoy for the Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases.

City of the Month: Park City, UT ? Travel Smart Blog

Last week, the acclaimed Sundance Film Festival honored the top independent movies and players. Every year, its host, Park City, Utah, takes the best supporting role for the annual celeb-studded event.

Park City is topping all the travel lists (Forbes, Travel + Leisure, Ski Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler) lately surpassing destinations such as Aspen. Why? Accessibility, creativity, and activity!

Park City is a transformed old mining town with three ski resorts surrounding it. The quaintness of Park City?s Main Street is a thin veil for souvenirs and high-end retail. And don?t be deceived by the quaint fa?ade as the price tag for a vacation in and around this city is never bargain-priced. The four block historic strip is perfect for strolling or you can step into Robert Redford?s restaurant, Zoom, which offers some delicious local fare.

Accessibility

Nobody wants to spend the better part of a day traveling into a destination. Park City is more accessible than many of the top ski resort towns ? located only 45 minutes from The Salt Lake City airport. The international airport serves many airlines; Delta Air Lines has nonstop flights from more than 100 cities. Shuttles are a better choice than renting a car.

Hotels in Park City are numerous; from the big brand hotels to the local lodges.

Creativity

It has become a hub of culinary creativity with more than 100 restaurants and some truly inspired eateries.

If dining among celebrities in a beautiful mountain setting sounds appealing, you?ll want to check-in to the Waldorf-Astoria. Get a table at Slopes, a new restaurant deemed America?s hottest hotel restaurant in 2012 by Travel & Leisure.

The Waldorf-Astoria?s renowned bar and lounge, Powder Ice Lounge, features a 14-foot sculpted ice bar (it?s literally made of ice) and is one of the most popular photo-ops in the city.

Activity

Park City features three world-class resorts ? Deer Valley Resort, Canyons Resort and Park City Mountain Resort ? that offer three seasons of fun for everyone. (I say three because spring is a transitional season when the resorts close, the snow melts, and the preparations for the summer season are taking place.)

In the winter, the powder is abundant. Park City is home to the steep mountains where the US Ski Team trains attracting the world?s top snow sport enthusiasts, and a very chic and sophisticated crowd.

The Utah Olympic Park near Park City was the site of the 2002 Bobsled, Luge and Ski Jumping competitions. Today, visitors are treated to a guided tour of the park, athlete training sessions, 70 mile-per-hour bobsled rides, zipline rides, Quicksilver alpine slide rides, Olympic museum, an interactive museum, freestyle aerial and ski jumping shows on Saturdays at noon and a variety of camps for all ages.

In the summer and fall, the resorts convert their lifts and runs into over 400 miles of trails for biking and hiking and endless activities. Deer Valley?s Mountain Biking School offers lessons for those looking to improve their skills or just a guide for some of the areas best trails.

Best Tips For High Blood Pressure Patients - Natural health, fitness ...

Blood pressure issues are not considered as a disease, rather people (or patients) take them lightly. Having low or high blood pressure is not a really big deal for most of the people but let me tell you, every year millions of people die due to this disease. If you are also suffering from this particular disease you need to take it seriously. It is a disease that can take your life.
Here are a few best tips for these patients that will help you in keeping your blood pressure low.
- Exercise is the best gift that you can give to your body. Those who do exercise regularly, stay away from all the major diseases and health issues including high blood pressure. When your arteries and blood vessels are clogged due to fat, your heart then has to exert more pressure to pump blood to all the parts of your body. This result in high blood pressure and exercise helps you in getting rid of all the fat, thus making things easy for your heart.
- You need to eat healthy food. It has the power to keep your body healthy and will also help you in fighting high blood pressure. Since all you need to do to get rid of this problem is to burn your body fat and that can be easily done by eating vegetables and fruits. They don't make you fat.
- Meantime, you also need to stay away from certain food items and ingredients for instance, artificial preservatives, butter, cheese, pizzas, snacks, canned vegetables, fruits etc. All these and many other edibles are supposed to be lethal for such patients.
- Avoid stress and hypertension. Stress can create lots of problems for these patients. When you are stressed, your body produces certain hormones that force your heart to pump more blood thus increasing the pressure. Stress is suicidal for these patients in fact stress is one of the major reasons of this disease. You have to avoid it.
- Say goodbye to tobacco, caffeine, cigarettes, alcohol, wine and carbonated beverages. All these items are not good for these patients. However, you can use them occasionally but constant and regular use of these items can create serious problems for the patient.

It's time to howl at the Full Wolf Moon

NASA

Up-close exploration of the moon, Earth's only natural satellite, began in 1959 and hasn't stopped. Take a look at scenes from 50 years of moon exploration.

By Joe Rao, Space.com

The first full moon of 2013 will light up the night sky on Saturday night, but did you know it's a full moon of many names?

Full moon names date back to the Native American tribes of a few hundred years ago, who lived in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.

There were some variations in the moon names, but in general, the same ones were used throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England on west to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar (or "synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full moon shift from year to year.

Here is a listing of all of the full moon names, as well as the dates and times for 2013. Unless otherwise noted, all times are for the Eastern time zone:

Jan. 26, 11:38 p.m. ET ?Full Wolf Moon: Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages.? It was also known as the Old Moon or the Moon after Yule.? In some tribes this was the Full Snow Moon; most applied that name to the next moon. [Full Moon: Why Does It Happen? (Video)]

Feb. 25, 3:26 p.m. ET ?Full Snow Moon: Usually the heaviest snows fall in this month. Hunting becomes very difficult, and hence, to some tribes this was the Full Hunger Moon.?

March 27, 5:27 a.m. ET ?Full Worm Moon: In this month the ground softens and the earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. [Phases of the Moon in 2013: A Lunar Calendar]

In 2013, this is also the Paschal Full Moon?? the first full moon of the spring season. The first Sunday following the paschal moon is Easter Sunday, which indeed will be observed four days later on Sunday, March 31.

April 25, 3:57 p.m. ET ??Full Pink Moon: The grass pink or wild phlox is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names were the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and ? among coastal tribes ? the Full Fish Moon, when the shad come upstream to spawn. The moon will also undergo a very slight partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from the Eastern Hemisphere, but not from North America. At its peak, less than 1.5 percent of the moon's diameter will be immersed in Earth?s umbral shadow; a very underwhelming event, to say the least.

May 25, 12:25 a.m. ET ??Full Flower Moon: Flowers are now abundant everywhere. It was also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon. The moon will also undergo a penumbral lunar eclipse, but the passage of the moon's disk into Earth's shadow will result in one of the slightest eclipses of all, administering a mere touch of penumbral shadow at the northernmost part of the lunar limb.

June 23, 7:32 a.m. ET ??Full Strawberry Moon: Strawberry-picking season peaks during this month.? Europeans called this the Rose Moon. The moon will also arrive at perigee only 32 minutes earlier, at 7 a.m. ET at a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 kilometers) from Earth. So this is the biggest full moon of 2013. Very high ocean tides can be expected during the next two or three days, thanks to the coincidence of perigee with the full moon.?

July 22, 2:16 p.m. ET??Full Buck Moon: Named for when the new antlers of buck deer push out from their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, thunderstorms now being most frequent. Sometimes it's also called the Full Hay Moon.

Aug. 20, 9:45 p.m. ET ??Full Sturgeon Moon: This large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water like Lake Champlain is most readily caught at this time. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon, because when the moon rises it looks reddish through a sultry haze. It was also known as the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Sept. 19, 7:13 a.m. ET ??Full Harvest Moon: Traditionally, this designation goes to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal (fall) equinox. The Harvest Moon usually comes in September, but (on average) once or twice a decade it will fall in early October.? At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon.?

Usually the moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice ? the chief Indian staples ? are now ready for gathering.

Oct. 18, 7:38 p.m. ET ??Full Hunters' Moon: With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it's now time to hunt.? Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, as well as other animals, which can be caught for a Thanksgiving banquet after the harvest.?

A penumbral lunar eclipse will also take place. Perhaps for some minutes centered on the time of greatest eclipse (7:50 p.m. ET) the penumbra might be marginally detectable over the moon?s southernmost limb, for at that moment the penumbral magnitude will reach 76.5 percent.? Those living across the eastern half of North America might see some evidence of this faint penumbral shading soon after local moonrise.

Nov. 17, 10:16 a.m. ET ?Full Beaver Moon: At this point of the year, it's time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Full Moon came from the fact that the beavers are now active in their preparation for winter. It's also called the Frosty Moon.

Dec. 17, 4:28 a.m. ET ??Full Cold Moon: On occasion, this moon was also called the Moon Before Yule. December is also the month the winter cold fastens its grip. Sometimes this moon is referred to as the Full Long Nights Moon, and the term "Long Night" Moon is a very appropriate name because the nights are now indeed long and the moon is above the horizon a long time. This particular full moon makes its highest arc across the night sky because it's diametrically opposite to the low sun.?

NEW YORK (AP) ? Dr. Phil McGraw has booked the first on-camera interview with the man who allegedly concocted the girlfriend hoax that ensnared Notre Dame football star Manti Te'o.

A "Dr. Phil Show" spokesperson confirmed on Friday the interview with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo (roh-NY-ah too-ee-AH'-so-SO'-poh), the man accused of creating an online persona of a nonexistent woman who Te'o said he fell for without ever meeting face-to-face.

The ruse was uncovered last week by Deadspin.com, which reported that Tuiasosopo created the woman, named Lennay Kekua, who then supposedly died last September.

No further details of the "Dr. Phil" interview, including its airdate, were announced.

This interview follows the first on-camera interview with Te'o conducted this week by Katie Couric.

(AP) ? Exxon has once again surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable company after the iPhone and iPad maker saw its stock price falter.

Apple Inc.'s stock has been on the decline since the company's quarterly earnings report Wednesday suggested that its fast growth phase, rare for a company of its size, may be coming to an end.

Apple's stock fell 2.4 percent to close Friday at $439.88 for a market capitalization of $413 billion. That followed a 12 percent drop on Thursday, the biggest one-day percentage drop for the company since 2008.

Exxon Mobil Corp. gained 38 cents Friday to $91.73 for a market capitalization of $418 billion.

Apple first surpassed Exxon in the summer of 2011, displacing the oil company from a perch it had held since 2005. The two companies traded places through that fall, until Apple surpassed Exxon for good in early 2012 ? at least until Friday.

China's largest oil company, PetroChina, could lay claim to having hit a market capitalization even higher than either Exxon's or Apple's, but only based on prices on the Shanghai stock exchange, which is isolated from the rest of the financial world because of Chinese laws on foreign investment. PetroChina's shares also trade in Hong Kong and on the New York Stock Exchange. Based on prices there, its market capitalization never went as high as $500 billion.

Apple and Exxon are among only a half dozen U.S. companies to have ever reached $500 billion in market value. Apple and Microsoft Corp. are the only ones to have ever hit $600 billion.

Apple's stock price peaked in September at $705.07 on the day the iPhone 5 was released. Exxon, in the meantime, has been trading steady. Its business ? oil ? seems less prone to stock market ups and downs than the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech darling.

Exxon, which is based in Irving, Texas, set a record in 2008 for the highest quarterly earnings by any company. In the first nine months of 2012, Exxon earned nearly $35 billion, or 10 percent more than the same period in 2011, on revenue of $367 billion. Results for the fourth quarter are due Feb. 1.

Exxon, the biggest investor-owned energy company in the world, predicted in December that oil will continue to be the most important source of energy. That's because cars, trucks, airplanes, trains and ships will still depend heavily on oil-derived fuels such as gasoline and diesel.

This year, investors seem unforgiving with Apple, looking for perfection and punishing the stock for anything less. The company's stock price slipped below $500 for the first time last week, as investors saw signs that the iPhone 5 was falling behind competition from phones running Google's Android software, especially those from Samsung Electronics Co.

The latest quarterly report added to the concerns. Apple warned that its revenue growth, which had been running at a speed more reminiscent of promising startups than multi-national corporations, is slowing down considerably.

A big reason: It has been nearly three years since a new product has come from a company still seen as the embodiment of innovation. That last product, the iPad, came in 2010, when its CEO Steve Jobs was still alive. Some analysts question whether Apple can keep growing by just releasing new versions of its old products. The long-rumored Apple TV, is still just that, a rumor.

Ex-CIA officer sentenced to 30 months in prison in leaks case

(Reuters) - A former Central Intelligence Agency officer was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Friday for blowing a CIA agent's cover, the Justice Department said.

John Kiriakou's sentence as part of a plea agreement marks the first time in 27 years that someone has gone to prison for disclosing a covert CIA agent's name.

Kiriakou was sentenced in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, a Justice Department spokesman said. He had pleaded guilty in October to one count of disclosing an agent's identity.

His prison term will be followed by three years of supervised release, the spokesman said.

Kiriakou revealed the agent's name in a 2008 email to a reporter. He had repeatedly helped journalists with information on activities such as waterboarding and the CIA's interrogation of al Qaeda operative Abu Zubaydah.

The guilty plea closed one of six prosecutions the Obama administration has pursued against alleged leakers of classified information.

Kiriakou retired from the CIA in 2004. By 2007, he was speaking publicly about waterboarding and his participation in Zubaydah's interrogation.

Defense lawyers for detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, disclosed in a 2009 military commission filing that they knew the identities of some covert U.S. personnel.

An inquiry led U.S. officials to Kiriakou because the journalist with whom he spoke also talked to a defense team investigator. Prosecutors said the case was unrelated to Kiriakou's 2007 discussion of waterboarding.

vVv Gaming Announces New Community Application Process!

?
The vVv Community Member Application process has changed and evolved over the last 5 years, from the original three to six month process, to the more recent one month hard waiting time. Today, we are excited to announce the new community application process that will allow the community to decide which applicants are accepted through an endorsement system!

When Community Applications reopen on February 1st, we are giving the community the opportunity to decide who will be accepted. This means:

  • The only thing an application requires for an interview is endorsements by current community members. An application will need to receive:
    • 5 endorsements from current vVv Members. Only one endorsement will be accepted per week, which creates a?minimum?of a 5 week application period.
    • At least 4 of these endorsements must come from members of the division to which you are applying. This allows the division to have a larger say on who gets to be a part of their community.
    • A maximum of 1 endorsement may be from an outside division. This includes an endorsement by a staff member, sponsored player, or community member from any other division.

If an application has not received 5 endorsements by the end of 8 weeks, the application will be closed, and the applicant will need to re-apply.
?
An official endorsement template that our community can use will be released early next week. The template will give community members the chance to provide an explanation as to why this gamer should be accepted into vVv Gaming.
?
Once an application has received 5 endorsements the applicant will still go through a pre-interview with the division manager, as well as a final interview with myself or vVv Doomhammer. This will help to make sure our new members are aware of the history and culture of vVv gaming, as well as what will be expected of them as a member.

Additionally, once a week each division manager will hold virtual meet-and-greet meetings on our Mumble server for applicants and community members. The dates and times of these meetings will be decided by the manager and will be clearly posted. This will give a chance for applicants to get to know the staff and community in their division on a personal level in a casual setting. Expect the first of these meetings to take place before February first to answer any questions about the new application process and what you as a community member can do!
?
Applications will re-open on February 1st?for?League of Legends?and our new division:?Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
?
StarCraft 2?applications will not re-open. Instead, we will only be accepting applications for the StarCraft 2 Aspire program, as that is the best service we can possibly offer StarCraft 2 players. Anyone interested in joining Aspire should contact?vVv BabyToss?or?vVv Razor?about available positions.?

?

Additionally, if there is a title that you believe vVv Gaming should be looking into supporting, you can submit a proposal which can be found in our new forum titled:?'Would you like vVv Gaming to support a new game?'

?

?
We are also currently reviewing sponsorship applicants for League of Legends and Call of Duty if you are interested in applying, or know a team that may be a good fit for vVv Gaming,?click here.
?
If you are interested in helping vVv and eSports for 2013, we are also currently seeking staff for community and media positions for League of Legends and Call of Duty.?Click here.
?
These exciting changes are part of our direction for 2013. We have a lot of awesome things planned, and we look forward to another amazing year of gaming with all of you! Stay connected with the community and updated on our upcoming announcements through the social links below!

A Week After Launching On iOS, Temple Run 2 Hits Google Play

Screen Shot 2013-01-24 at 9.39.40 AMTemple Run was one of the most popular games of 2012, seeing 2.5 million downloads on Christmas day alone. But like any good mobile gaming studio, Imangi Studios has released the sequel to the hit racing/escaping game on both iOS and Android. The iOS version of Temple Run 2 was made available on January 17, and saw over 6 million downloads in the first 24 hours. But Temple Run 2 for Android has just arrived on the Google Play store. The game is awesome, to put it simply. If you enjoyed the original Temple Run in any capacity, you’ll like Temple Run 2 even more. The sequel takes all the same gameplay rules of the first game ? you escape from ravenous monkeys and collect coins while running through an ancient temple, ducking, jumping and swerving around to avoid obstacles. In Temple Run 2, however, the course itself has curves, hills, and dips. It’s automatically more difficult than its predecessor because of this, as you don’t have as many straight lines and right angles as before. Plus, there are new modes of transportation like ropes to slide down and train carts to ride, which is just thrilling. And, if you’re competitive like me, you’ll be happy to know that there are brand new power-ups in the game, and one of them even sets you on fire. The app is free, and available now in both the App Store and Google Play.

Sundance 2013: RADiUS-TWC falls for Amanda Seyfried as "Lovelace"

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - The Weinstein Company's RADiUS fell in love quickly with "Lovelace," a biopic about porn star Linda Lovelace that the multi-platform label acquired Tuesday night at Sundance. The film, which stars Amandra Seyfried, premiered Tuesday, prompting a reported $3 million bid.

The deal marks the third acquisition of the festival for RADiUS, which also picked up "Concussion" and "20 Feet From Stardom." It plans to release "Lovelace" in the fall, mixing theatrical with a VOD release.

Written by Andy Bellin and directed by Oscar-winning documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffery Friedman, "Lovelace" chronicles the rise of Linda Lovelace, her role in the sexual revolution of the 1970s and her eventual rejection of pornography. Lovelace was the star of "Deep Throat," one of the first and most successful pornographic movies.

"'Lovelace' delivers on every level - the story coupled with top notch performances makes for a highly compelling and sophisticated look into a cultural phenomenon," RADiUS co-presidents Tom Quinn and Jason Janego said in a statement. "We are over the moon to have the film on our 2013 slate."

Peter Sarsgaard, Hank Azaria, Wes Bentley, Adam Brody, Bobby Cannavale, James Franco, Debi Mazar, Sharon Stone, Chloe Sevigny, Juno Temple and Chris Noth all complement Seyfried in the star-studded cast. Millenium Entertainment's Mark Gill and Avi Lerner made the deal with RADiUS and The Weinstein Company's David Glasser.

Low calorie sweeteners: Are they Good for Us? | Results by Renee

Today, I listened to a webinar sponsored by the Beverage Institute for Health and Wellness. As a dietitian, I have been telling my clients that low-calorie foods/drinks sweetened with artifical sweeteners can help you gain weight. Therefore it was better to drink regular soda diluted with water or eat regular salad dressings(2 tbsps.)

But, the webinar demonstrated when a person is taking in low-calorie sweeteners drinks or foods, they are
1. following a diet
2. eating more fruits and vegetables
3. eating more high-fiber foods
4. drinking more water
5 are more active
5. Have a higher education level, higher income and lost more weight than the traditional dieters.

Myth
Low-calorie sweetners:drinks or foods do not cause weight gain.
People who consumed these foods/drinks do not crave for sugar as we thought.
And their insulin levels didn?t go higher than the traditional dieters.

Conclusion
