Best & Worst Beauty Of The Week: Alicia Keys, Kate Middleton, Lady Gaga And More (PHOTOS)

This week in beauty we learned how to do a "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" inspired manicure, that Dolly Parton "used a burnt matchstick for eyeliner" (seriously) along with other backwoods beauty tips from the country singer and that we can eat our way to better, less dry skin -- now that's a beauty ritual we can get into!

Now, we're shifting our focus to the red carpet, showcasing the best, worst and most interesting examples of hair, makeup and nails that we came across this week. Take a look, get inspired and vote for your faves!

  • BEST: Alicia Keys

We still can't get enough of <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/25/alicia-keys-style-evolution_n_1230546.html">Alicia Keys'</a> short 'do. The 31-year-old singer went for the chop in July (showing it off to her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/20/alicia-keys-short-haircut_n_1689673.html">Twitter following</a>, she's still rockin' the bob. Not only was <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/28/alicia-keys-on-fire-photo-2012_n_2198478.html">her outfit</a> at a November 26th radio appearance spot on, her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/06/alicia-keys-paris-fashion-week_n_1323527.html">beauty look</a> was smokin'. She kept eye makeup to a minimum with only eyeliner and mascara to keep the focus on her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/29/best-lipstick-orange-pink_n_1444136.html">coral color</a> lips. Dusty rose blush finished off the look, giving her a radiant glow.

  • WORST: Nicole Kidman

The usually <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/23/nicole-kidman-emmys-2012-dress_n_1908154.html">flawless</a> Nicole Kidman was off her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/19/nicole-kidman-photos-pictures-fashion_n_1607068.html">A game</a> at the Australians In Film Screening of "<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/01/the-paperboy-trailer-nicole-kidman-zac-efron-urinate_n_1729865.html">The Paperboy</a>" on November 25th. Kidman's typically vibrant strawberry blonde hair looked flat, damaged and downright messy. In addition her dark eyeliner looked especially harsh with her pale skin tone. Maybe Kidman should start taking tips from her daughter Sunday Rose, who's apparently a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/04/nicole-kidman-daughter-su_n_791990.html">makeup artist in the making</a>.

  • BEST: Kate Middleton

The big beauty news this week was Kate Middleton's new...gasp...<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/27/kate-middleton-natural-history-museum-green-dress_n_2199487.html?utm_hp_ref=kate-middleton">cut and color</a>. The face framing layers look fab on her, even on a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/28/kate-middleton-prince-william-cambridge-glowing-photos_n_2203261.html?utm_hp_ref=kate-middleton">windy day</a> like it was on her visit to The Guildhall in Cambridge on November 28th. We love that she took a risk with this very <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/29/kate-middleton-bangs-hairstyle-how-to_n_2207242.html?utm_hp_ref=kate-middleton">'70s retro look</a>. In typical <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/13/kate-middleton-did-her-ow_n_795725.html">Middleton style </a>, she kept her face fairly bare opting only for lovely pink <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/07/blush-video_n_947130.html">blush</a>. Work it, Kate!

  • WORST: Lady Gaga

We love how <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/07/mila-kunis-dating-2012_n_1328174.html?utm_hp_ref=lady-gaga">opinionated</a> Lady Gaga is, especially about her recent <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/25/lady-gaga-weight-singer-bulimic-teenager_n_1913701.html?utm_hp_ref=lady-gaga">weight gain</a> and the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/29/lady-gaga-pope-gay-marriage_n_1925324.html?utm_hp_ref=lady-gaga">causes she believes in</a> but her makeup choices...we're not so into. When she arrived at South Africa's Lanseria Airport on November 27th, she sported what looked like a blonde bob wig and a pair of giant shades. We've seen some <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/napoleon-perdis/going-gaga-for-lady-gaga_b_396446.html">unconventional beauty choices</a> from Mother Monster before, but this recent incognito <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/03/80s-fashion-photos_n_1642744.html">80s</a> inspired look was still a bit of a surprise.

  • BEST: Karlie Kloss

Model Karlie Kloss is having a great year: She's the host of MTV's "<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/06/house-of-style-hosts-karlie-kloss-joan-smalls_n_1863089.html?utm_hp_ref=karlie-kloss">House of Style</a>" and has been linked to a<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/09/karlie-kloss-joshua-kushner-dating-_n_2101542.html?utm_hp_ref=karlie-kloss"> slew of cuties</a>. Not to mention she's the face of the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/30/karlie-kloss-target-neiman-marcus-collaboration_n_1719122.html?utm_hp_ref=karlie-kloss">Target + Neiman Marcus collection</a>. At the launch event on November 28th, the 20-year-old looked <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/12/victorias-secret-karlie-kloss-2012-photo_n_2094569.html?utm_hp_ref=karlie-kloss">radiant</a> with that wispy short hairstyle we first spotted at the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/08/victorias-secret-fashion-show-2012_n_2090362.html?utm_hp_ref=karlie-kloss">Victoria's Secret show</a>. She looked fresh faced with only eyeliner, blush to contour her already amazing cheekbones and lipgloss. Well played, Karlie!

  • WORST: Leighton Meester

Although the naturally beautiful actress<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/09/leighton-meester-style_n_1409547.html"> Leighton Meester</a> always looks great <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/16/leighton-meester-uptown-downtown-beauty_n_965388.html">with</a> or <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/26/leighton-meester-without-makeup_n_1032261.html">without makeup</a>, her recent <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/26/leighton-meester-hair-cut-photos_n_2023171.html">hair cut</a> has posed a challenge. At the Target+ Neiman Marcus Holiday Celebration she rocked a red pout but we weren't a fan of the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/05/leighton-meester-gossip-girl_n_1940129.html">ex-Gossip Girl's</a> tight pompadour hairstyle. We say go for loose locks a la Karlie Kloss instead.

  • Kate Bosworth

Actress Kate Bosworth is a bonafide <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/13/kate-bosworth-photo_n_1961832.html">fashion plate</a>, and when it comes to her beauty look she knows what works for her. She often opts for more natural and easy styles that display her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/04/16/kate-bosworth-hairstyles-_n_1429604.html">natural beauty</a>. At the Target + Neiman Marcus Holiday Collection event she stayed with pink hues on her cheeks and <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/15/best-makeup-pink-lipstick_n_1512928.html">lips</a> and went with just a little bit of shimmer around her her eyes. But we suspect that besides her luminous foundation, the glow might also have something to do with her new <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/06/kate-bosworth-engaged-michael-polish-wed_n_1861267.html">engagement</a>.

  • Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne would never be described as understated. The Fashion Police host has had hair <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/26/kelly-osbourne-makeup-photos_n_1033182.html">every shade of the rainbow</a> and even got a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/27/kelly-osbourne-manicure-diamonds_n_1918663.html">$250,000 black diamond manicure</a> for the Emmys. Although we're sometimes fans of Kelly's looks (her <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/05/kelly-osbourne-gray-hair-_n_1255894.html">gray hair</a> being one of them) the odd hairstyle she sported at the W LOVE Hangover Ball on November 28th was definitely a miss. It looked rather well...tupe-like. Yikes! As always Kelly we appreciate your <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/12/kelly-osbourne-talks-body-confidence-glamour_n_1420424.html">confidence</a> but this style just wouldn't look good on anyone.

Get Your Finances in Order: a Few Tips | Personal Finance Blog ...

As we linger in the midst of post-recession and mild austerity, making and saving money may seem a tough task for many. However, there are a few canny little tricks that can be used to our advantages to make this task somewhat easier for many. Here?s some advice on getting your finances in order.

Say No to Payday Loans!

Due to the current economic climate and of course, the individual and personal throes of life, many Brits are struggling to make ends meet. Jobs are scarce, even many of those lucky enough to be working feel as if they?re being underpaid. Furthermore, rising living costs make most wages hard to survive off in the United Kingdom. In fact, recent reports have highlighted that more and more children are being forced to go to school hungry, due to a lack of resources at home.

To make things even worse, bank lending has somewhat subsisted since the recession and so, many Brits are unable to borrow off banks.

In such a climate, payday loans may seem to be an enticing option. However, a combination of immoral practices and extortionately high interest rates render payday loans as the worst option someone in financial difficulty could turn to. Payday loans may put food on the table and alleviate some of your financial distress for a moment, but this will only be a fleeting moment, which will end with you having even more money problems than prior to taking out the loan.

Say no to payday loans.

Tax Refunds

It may come as somewhat of a surprise, but a significant amount of business people miss out on thousands of pounds owed to them by the HMRC each year. In cases where the tax liability is less than the amount paid, money is likely to be owed to the payer in the form of tax refunds.

This can happen through a wide variety of circumstances and it may be best for you to hire expert assistance to discern whether or not you?re owed anything. However, rather than going for an expensive accountant, opt for one of the cheaper specialist firms that can be found online, such as RIFT at www.RIFTCapitalAllowances.com.

Work Harder, Earn More Money

The harder you work the more money you?ll earn. It really is as simple as that. Of course, the current situation in Britain at the moment is one of mass unemployment and a lack of job opportunities. However, working harder also applies to the unemployed, who have a responsibility to work harder in finding work.

After all, the more time you spend looking for a job, the more chances there?ll be of finding one.

How to use iTunes 11's new features (with the old look)

8 hrs.

Apple released its newest version of iTunes, and it's a complete overhaul to the entire program. As you'd?expect, that means there are a few cool (somewhat) hidden features. Here are some we've found especially helpful.

With any new iteration of software you're bound to have a bit of a learning curve as you get used to it.?iTunes? 11?is no different, and the first thing you're greeted to when you launch it is a completely different main screen. The big news with iTunes 11 is the new interface, but hidden beneath that is some pretty cool functionality you might not notice at first glance.

Yes, you can get the old iTunes look back (sidebar and all)
Let's start with what we're guessing is most people's main gripe: it looks different. It's true, it does, and if you're not a fan of browsing your music library with giant covers, and navigating drop-down menus, iTunes 11 is a bit annoying. The good news? You can get the old look back:

  • Get the sidebar back by clicking View > Show Sidebar (or hitting Alt+Cmd+S).
  • Get the status bar back by clicking View > Show Status Bar (or hit Command+/).
  • Click Songs in the top bar, and sort by Artist for the traditional list view.

Now, iTunes 11 should look about the same as iTunes 10.

Scan iTunes gift cards with your camera
Entering?in the code from a gift?certificate is always a bit annoying. With iTunes 11, all you need is a camera:

  • Head into the iTunes Store, and Click "Redeem" at the bottom of the screen under the "Manage" list (or?click this link)
  • Click "Use Camera"
  • Hold your gift card up to the camera and wait for it to register.

That's it! No more fumbling around typing a random string of letters and numbers together.

Expanded view replaces cover flow
Cover Flow is gone in iTunes 11 and it's replaced with the new "Expanded View." When you're viewing your library by Albums, simply select an album, and you get an expanded view right there with all the album info. It works a lot better than Cover Flow and makes it so you can quickly view album info without leaving the place you're at. You can either click the album art again, or the "X" in the right corner to make it go away.

Also, a fun fact: Expanded View uses the album artwork as a background for the view (see image at right), so it creates a different background for each album. You can disable this if you want under iTunes > Preferences > General Preferences. Just uncheck the "Use custom colors for open albums, movies, etc" box.

The 'up next' feature is actually awesome?
Ever have those moments where you're listening to a song and it reminds you of another song? You don't want to stop the song playing, but you do want to cue up the song you're thinking of. That's what "Up Next" lets you do. Instead of creating playlists for everything, you can create on-the-fly playlists of songs or albums.

You can do this from anywhere. Just right-click an album, artist, or song, click "Add to Up Next" and it's added to the queue. You can also click "Play Next" instead to add it to the top of the queue. To see what's in your queue, click the list button in the middle of iTunes, and to view the previously played tracks, click the little clock icon. "Up Next" replaces iTunes DJ/Party Shuffle, so if you're looking for those, you won't find them.

Your place is now saved across devices?
If you use a bunch of Apple products, say, an iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, one of the best new features in iTunes 11 is that it saves your progress in your media across all devices through iCloud. So, if you pause a movie, TV show, podcast, audiobook, or iTunes U file on your desktop, you can pick up right where you left off on another device.?

MiniPlayer is more functional
In older versions of iTunes, the MiniPlayer didn't do much except allow you to pause or skip tracks. Now, MiniPlayer allows you to search for new tracks, add new songs to the "Up Next" queue, and even control AirPlay volume.

To enable MiniPlayer, just click the window icon in the top right corner and iTunes will shrink down. When you mouse over the window, you can control playback or search for new tracks. Otherwise, it displays the currently playing track.

Preview history tracks what you listen to in the store?
The iTunes Store now tracks everything you listen to in its preview history panel. When you're in the store, click the list icon in the top right corner, and you're shown all the stuff you listened to recently. You can hit "Clear" to get rid of everything in the list Also worth noting is that provided you're signed in with iCloud, your previewed tracks on all your devices will sync here. So, if you preview a song on your iPhone, it will show in your preview history in iTunes.?

Search is now universal?
This isn't the most earth-shattering of news, but in iTunes 11 you have two main search areas: the store and your library. That's it. In previous versions you had to search separately for video, music, or podcasts. Now, it searches your entire local library, or the iTunes store for everything.

Also nice is the instant search results you get. Start typing a search, and iTunes starts delivering you results. Select what you want, and you're taken there directly. It's simple, but it works really well.

Apps get a list view for easy trimming
One of the most annoying things to do in older versions of iTunes was trimming down the apps downloaded on your computer. You had to do it in the Apps panel with large icons that seemed to take forever to load. Now you can do it with in a List View, and it supports the same basic sort options you get with music (Date Added, Purchase Date, Size, etc).

All you need to do is select the Apps tab, then click "List." This should come in really handy when you're cleaning out old apps you don't use anymore. Reader?shafnitz points out?this view has been around a little while, but if nothing else it's more prevalent now.

Is there a specific character skeleton we have to fill out? I'm actually quite interested in this RP since the plot is open/unclear/mysterious. That and I had a bias for the Darker than Black icon. :3

JK Rowling 'dismayed' at response to press report

(AP) ? Victims of press intrusion including writer J.K. Rowling on Friday urged Britain's political leaders to fully implement a judge's recommendations on regulating the country's often unruly newspapers.

Rowling, who was one of dozens of people who gave evidence about press intrusion last year during a media ethics inquiry, said that she was "alarmed and dismayed" by Prime Minister David Cameron's lukewarm response to Lord Justice Brian Leveson's report, published Thursday to conclude the probe.

Leveson's 2,000-page report concluded that Britain's press sometimes "wreaked havoc with the lives of innocent people," and recommended the print media be regulated by a new body enshrined in law. Cameron said he welcomed the proposal, but was reluctant to set down new laws to back a press regulator because such a move could threaten freedom of the press.

Rowling wrote on the website of the Hacked Off group, which campaigns for victims of press intrusion, that she feared nothing will change to hold the press to account.

"Having taken David Cameron's assurances in good faith at the outset of the inquiry he set up, I am merely one among many who feel duped and angry in its wake," she wrote.

The 47-year-old writer had told of how journalists had driven her out of her home and targeted her 5-year-old daughter at school during the inquiry, triggered by a scandal over tabloid phone hacking that expanded to engulf senior figures in politics, the police and Rupert Murdoch's media empire.

Hacked Off on Friday launched an online petition urging Cameron and other politicians to implement Leveson's recommendations in full.

The recommendations have pitched Cameron against Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, his coalition partner, who argued that a new law on press regulation should be introduced without delay. Cross-party talks were being held in an attempt to reach an agreement.
