If You?re A Restaurant Owner, PerfectMenu is Probably Perfect for Your Online Menu Needs

PerfectMenuWriting about billion-dollar valuations and companies flush with cash is certainly fun, entertaining, and hopefully enlightening, but it's always fun to come across a teeny-tiny startup solving a small, but real problem for a clientele you know almost nothing about. No better example than PerfectMenu.com and its dead-simple solution that helps eateries get their menus online and easily maintain them.

SugarSync

File synchronization is a service that every modern computer user needs, and SugarSync, a longtime PCMag.com Editors' Choice, is one of the best and simplest freemium services you'll find for personal use. A recent update to SugarSync's desktop client, version 2.0 (beta) , adds some new functionalityand creates a more seamless syncing experience by echoing the interfaces of the service mobile apps.

In a nutshell, file-syncing services enable you to access the most recent copy of all your files without emailing them to yourself or sticking them on a USB drive and carrying it around with you. SugarSync and similar services synchronize your files as you work on them on which ever computers and mobile devices you choose. A Web account serves as a backup method for getting at your files when you're using a shared or borrowed device, like a computer at an Internet caf?.

Major competitors in the personal file-syncing space, such as Dropbox (also an Editors' Choice) and Box all tend to be very good, if not excellent, with only a handful of differentiating factors, and many of those differences are more a matter of personal preference than "good, better, best." SugarSync remains one of my favorites because of its reliability, control over choosing just what to sync, support for all major platforms, and now its improved look. I can't imagine recommending any other service as a first option. SugarSync is not, however, the only service I use (I have a system for using different providers for different purposes). There's no reason to just choose one.

As simple as SugarSync is, anyone new to file synchronization needs to heed a few warnings. First, take two minutes to learn what file synchronization is and what it means. Synchronization is not the same as backup (although you do get some of the same perks), so you should not use it to free up space on your hard drive. When you "sync" something from your computer, don't then delete it!

SugarSync Accounts and Prices
To use SugarSync, you'll need an account. Sign up for a free account to get 5GB of space, or opt to pay for more. You can get 30GB of cloud storage for $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year; 60GB for $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year; 100GB for $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year; and 250GB for $24.99 per month or $249.99 per year.

See the chart below for more details on how SugarSync's price for storage space compares with other plans. Click the image to enlarge it.

You can sign up for a SugarSync account either before or after downloading and installing the client software. Launch SugarSync locally, and it will prompt you to login (or create an account) and name your PC or Mac, such as "Home laptop." And that's it. You're in.

What's New in Version 2?
If you haven't used SugarSync before, you'll first need to mark which files and folders you want to sync before SugarSync starts to look like much of anything.

Existing users will see a list of all the data they already have synced in the main window of the new interface. Its design closely resembles that of a mobile app, especially in its default dimensions (you can resize it). A top-line menu offers three choices?SugarSync, Tools, and Help?where you can access basic tools and operations. Below the top-line menu are three app-like buttons for Cloud, Sharing, and Activity, and to the far right, there's a search icon. Cloud, the default, shows the list of folders currently being synced, rather than of devices. That's the first major and noticeable difference from the old SugarSync. The message is, "Don't worry about where the data originated. All that matters is that it's here."

Drag-and-drop. SugarSync reserves a noticeable aqua-colored area at the top of the app for drag-and-drop functionality. Want to sync a folder? Just drag it into this new space. You can still right-click on folders or files anywhere on your computer to sync them, too, a feature I've always appreciated in SugarSync. When you sync a file or folder to SugarSync, you don't need to physically move the items anywhere, like you do with Dropbox. Just mark it to sync and it does. You'll see a small green circle with white checkmark that indicates the data is synced and up to date. When it's in the process of syncing, you'll see a curved white arrow in place of the checkmark. If you lose your Internet connection while working and your data changes state (like if you edit a file), the green icon will disappear completely until the next time you reconnect and SugarSync can once again sync the changes you've made in your files.

Cloud. Hover over any folder in the Cloud view, and you'll see whether it's synced to the machine that you're currently using. Click an information icon to see additional details about the original source of the data, where else it's synced, whether it's shared, and how much space it consumes. Click "Advanced" in this information pane, and you can add or edit the folder's label and remove the folder from SugarSync altogether.

"Person of the Year" Nomination for Higgs Boson Riddled with Errors

Time magazine recently posted 30 nominations for its ever-popular ?Person of the Year? award. Tucked in between President Barack Obama and the Korean rapper Psy is an unlikely candidate for the ?Person of the Year??a subatomic particle. As Scientific American readers are well aware, physicists at the Large Hadron Collider announced this summer that they had found something that looks much like long-elusive Higgs boson, causing a brief but wondrous worldwide bout of Higgsteria.

Under ordinary circumstances, we would be all for the elevation of the Higgs to ?Person of the Year? status, if only to further honor the heroic efforts of thousands of scientists and engineers who made the discovery possible (more on that below). But Time?s nomination threatens to do more harm than good. Every single sentence in Time?s nomination contains at least one serious error. The magazine scores a perfect five for five. In the interest of clarity, let?s do a quick edit:

Sentence 1: Take a moment to thank this little particle for all the work it does, because without it, you?d be just inchoate energy without so much as a bit of mass.

Error: The common understanding of the Higgs is that it is responsible for all mass in the universe, but this is untrue, as my colleague Daisy Yuhas explained last week in an illuminating (and factually accurate!) post: ?The Higgs field does not explain the origin of all mass. ?Many uninformed physicists have been saying that for years,? says theoretical physicist Chris Quigg of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. ?We have actually understood the source of most of the mass in the proton [for example] for some time,? Most mass?including your own?comes from the strong force, a force of nature that keeps the nucleus of atoms bound together.? The Higgs field does give rise to the masses of particles such as the W and Z bosons, as well as the electron. And it?s true that without it, the universe would be a very different place. ?Without that mass, electrons wouldn?t hook up with nuclei to form atoms. ?That would mean no valence bonding, so much of chemistry, essentially all, would vanish,? Quigg says. ?Therefore no solid structures and no template for life.??

Sentence 2: What?s more, the same would be true for the entire universe.

Error: See Sentence 1. Protons and neutrons would still have mass.

Sentence 3: It was in the 1960s that Scottish physicist Peter Higgs first posited the existence of a particle that causes energy to make the jump to matter.

Error: The Higgs field does not ?cause energy to make the jump to matter,? and it?s unclear why the author of this piece would think that true. But let?s be generous with our interpretation. The Higgs does explain why the W and Z bosons?the carriers of the weak force?have mass. Were they to be massless, they would necessarily travel at the speed of light, and thus could be considered ?energy? rather than ?matter? (as though there were a hard and fast dividing line between the two). They would be something like the photon?the carrier of the electromagnetic force. But is the photon pure ?energy?? Not at all. The photon is the poster child for behaving as both wave (energy) and particle (matter) at the same time.

And?Peter Higgs was neither the first nor the only physicist?to posit the existence of the particle that bears his name.

And he?s English (born in Newcastle), not Scottish.

Sentence 4: But it was not until last summer that a team of researchers at Europe?s Large Hadron Collider ? Rolf Heuer, Joseph Incandela and Fabiola Gianotti ? at last sealed the deal and in so doing finally fully confirmed Einstein?s general theory of relativity.

Error: Where to begin? Let?s start with Einstein. I honestly have no idea why the author would make any connection between the Higgs and general relativity. None! Because there is none. Einstein did teach us that energy and mass are two sides of the same coin (and that insight is a consequence of his special, not general, theory of relativity), but this teaching works at cross purposes to the author?s repeated assertions that the Higgs somehow transforms energy into matter.

Not to mention that no scientific theory could ever be ?finally fully? confirmed. What would it mean for a scientific theory to be ?finally fully? confirmed? Is he suggesting that no evidence could ever arise that could challenge it? Purely mathematical theorems can be proven. Scientific theories can only be disproven.

And then there?s the attribution problem. The author cites ?a team? of three researchers that discovered the Higgs. He?s only off by three or four orders of magnitude. Two experiments at the LHC?ATLAS and CMS?independently confirmed the discovery this summer. Each of these experiments is made of about 3,000 working physicists. At the time of the announcement, Incandela and Gianotti were leading each of the experiments, but leaders change all the time (Incandela has led CMS for less than a year, for example), and the Higgs discovery has been a multi-decade long project.

Sentence 5: The Higgs ? as particles do ? immediately decayed to more-fundamental particles, but the scientists would surely be happy to collect any honors or awards in its stead.

Error: ?More-fundamental? particles? Certain particles such as the proton or the neutron are ?composite? particles?they?re composed of other particles (in this case, quarks and gluons). But the ?fundamental? particles in the Standard Model of particle physics are not composites. They are, so far as we can tell, indivisible. Certainly they can change from one to another, but they don?t break apart into ?more fundamental? particles. The Higgs is itself a fundamental particle. In fact, this is a big part of the reason for all the excitement?it was the last fundamental particle predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics that had eluded detection. It decays, but when it does it changes into other equally fundamental particles.

Time, I?m all for awarding the Higgs boson as the 2012 Person of the Year. But if you do, please let someone who understands something about particle physics read the laudatory article before it goes to print. I can think of 6,000-odd people who would be good for the job.

Northern California Flood Threat Now Through Weekend

Bay Area commuters struggled through driving rain on Wednesday morning, surprised not at its appearance, which had been forecasted, but at its intensity. The National Weather Service in Sacramento issued a flood watch for Northern California on Tuesday, as the Bay Area enjoyed sunny skies followed by a fine moonlit evening. A weather system comprised of a series of powerful rainstorms is forecasted to last through the weekend.

Buckets of water periodically spilled onto pedestrians from bulging shop awnings and from the tops of bus stop shelters in San Francisco, and swirling gullies appeared around drains blocked with autumn leaves, creating ankle-deep puddles impossible to avoid. Drivers faced their own set of challenges. A burst of sunshine appeared by noon in downtown San Francisco, but the five-day forecast calls for significantly more rainfall.

While Northern California typically enjoys some of the nation's most enviable weather, local residents are aware of the adage regarding California's four seasons: earthquake, fire, flood, and drought. Flooding is one of the most common natural disasters in the United States, according to FEMA. We are all under heightened awareness in the wake of Hurricane Sandy's widespread and severe damage in October 2012.

Drivers are advised to prepare for longer journey times at reduced speed due to necessary precautions on wet road surfaces and to avoid low-lying areas. Under windy conditions, drivers are reminded to be alert to falling tree branches and debris and cross winds on exposed routes and bridges.

Both pedestrians and drivers are reminded to avoid walking through moving water, as a few inches of moving water can prompt a fall. If you must walk in water, look for where the water is not moving, and use a branch or a stick to check the depth, as well as whether the ground is firm ahead of you.

Home preparation advice calls for inspecting drains and gutters to clear leaves, checking seals on windows and doors, lowering water levels in outdoor pools and clearing filters, and keeping your heating system inspections up to date. FEMA advises putting together and maintaining an emergency supply kit, including canned foods and a manual opener, non-perishable food and camping cooking equipment, a good supply of drinking water, any essential medicines, flashlights, candles and a lighter, a battery-operated radio, fresh batteries of various sizes, and a first-aid kit.

The flood watch is issued across a wide region from the Oregon border to coastal San Diego County, with high surf advisories and wind advisories into interiors across California and into Nevada. Wind gusts are forecasted to reach as high as 70 mph in coastal areas.

Powerball jackpot balloons to record $550 million

The allure of the record $550 million Powerball jackpot has led to long lines across the nation at local mini-marts and gas stations, with Americans hoping their champagne and caviar dreams become a reality when the numbers are drawn tonight.

The jackpot was boosted Tuesday from $425 million to the now historic $550 million sum, which is expected to get sweeter as millions of Americans rush to the store for their last chance to purchase a ticket and become a multi-millionaire overnight.

Powerball officials tell ABC News they expect to sell more than 105,000 tickets every minute before the drawing. When the dust settles, more than 189 million tickets would have been sold for the half a billion-dollar jackpot. That's more than double the number sold for Saturday's $325 jackpot that nobody won.

ABC News was allowed access to the Powerball studios in Tallahassee, Fla., where the 11 p.m. ET drawing will take place. The closely guarded machines and balls are locked in a vault before the numbers are drawn and only a select few are allowed inside the room during the actual broadcast.

Anyone who enters or leaves the vault is documented and workers who handle the lottery balls wear gloves, worried that human touch might change what numbers are randomly drawn.

Cameras are located in every nook and cranny of the Powerball studio, spying on workers as they ready the machines for the big moment. Lottery officials in several states will be watching those feeds in real time to monitor the proceedings.

Not everyone has Powerball fever in the country as tickets for tonight's jackpot are not offered in eight states. But that has not stopped many Californians and Nevadans who have flocked to Arizona to get in on the action.

"I'd say the line has to be like three, three and a half hours," one person told ABC News while waiting online to purchase tickets Tuesday.

Still, the long lines have not deterred those who hope to dramatically change their lifestyle and make their wildest dreams become a reality.

"I'm going to the Bahamas and enjoying myself on an island," said one Powerball hopeful.

Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Des Moines, Iowa-based Multi-State Lottery Association, said the chance of getting a winner tonight is approaching 60 percent.

"We call it the redneck retirement fund cause sooner or later, somebody is going to," said one man.

There has been no Powerball winner since Oct. 6 ? that's 16 consecutive drawings without a winner. It's the second-highest jackpot in US lottery history, behind only the $656 million Mega Millions prize in March.

Powerball tickets doubled in price in January to $2, and while the number of tickets sold initially dropped, sales revenue has increased by about 35 percent over 2011, according to the Associated Press.

Lottery officials put the odds of winning Wednesday's Powerball pot at one in 175 million. With so many people plaything this time around, some are worried it may hurt their odds.

"Your odds of being a winner are still the same. With so many people playing, it does mean are more likely to split the jackpot if you want," said Scott Norris, math professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Everyone who lines up with cash in their hand and dreams in their head seems to have a strategy in picking the winning combination of numbers. Or, do you simply let the computer pick for you?

"It doesn't matter. Your odds of winning are actually the same no matter who picks it," said Norris. Norris says the only real advantage that can help someone is buying more tickets.

"Your odds increase directly proportional to the number of tickets you buy. So if you buy 100, your odds are 1 in 7 million, but still astronomically small," he said.

With odds so small in a game where just about anyone who plays is a loser, there is some hope for those living in Illinois and New Jersey. Both states have sold three winning tickets for jackpots worth at least $300 million.

A single winner choosing the lump sum cash option would take home more than $327 million before taxes.

ABC News' Steve Osunsami and Ryan Owens contributed to this report.

tarnish barrera: The Importance of Editing Film and TV Production ...

To the uninitiated, editing may look like a monotonous task that is both mentally as well as physically taxing.

In fact, the film editor has the job identical to a cook.

The importance of editing dates back ages, chronicled in the book "The Technique Of Film And Video Editing" by Ken Dancyger. It upholds some of the finest examples of editing imparting the narrative of the film through silent shots, music and jump shots involving ordinary objects. Alfred Hitchcock's filmmaking (in films like 'Vertigo' and 'The Man Who Knew Too Much') is considered to have some of the finest editing work by the erstwhile standards, and can easily exemplify why editing is considered so integral to the success of a film or TV production.

In the earlier ages, editing was physically done, with the help of mechanical equipment that sliced, spliced and appropriately put together 'linearly' edited reels. The digital revolution and technological advances like the Firewire have magically simplified the post-production process. With software applications like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and Windows Movie Maker, editing is not restricted to professionally trained editors and apprentices. The ease of use and interactive applications has made it possible for film students, amateurs and one-time users to edit their own film or video productions.

The advent of computers has also allowed editors to enhance the creativity of their work. Unlike the mechanical equipment which was used on the original reel and did not warrant a liberal creative license or room for error to the editor, digital editing offers a huge scope for improvisation. The latter has opened up avenues for experimentation, much better treatment and quick editing procedures. Off late, films have been centered on editing and the whole post-production process, rather than the filming of the same. Recent examples can include 'The Lord of the Rings Trilogy' and 'Avatar', the latter incidentally being the highest revenue-grossing films of all time!

With technology advancing in the speed of light-years, editing in film and TV production has gained a pivotal role. And every filmmaking unit, irrespective of size, style, location or budget, has already acknowledged the same!

To get the best look at a person's face, look just below the eyes

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? They say that the eyes are the windows to the soul. However, to get a real idea of what a person is up to, according to UC Santa Barbara researchers Miguel Eckstein and Matt Peterson, the best place to check is right below the eyes. Their findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"It's pretty fast, it's effortless -- we're not really aware of what we're doing," said Miguel Eckstein, professor of psychology in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences. Using an eye tracker and more than 100 photos of faces and participants, Eckstein and graduate research assistant Peterson followed the gaze of the experiment's participants to determine where they look in the first crucial moment of identifying a person's identity, gender, and emotional state.

"For the majority of people, the first place we look at is somewhere in the middle, just below the eyes," Eckstein said. One possible reason could be that we are trained from youth to look there, because it's polite in some cultures. Or, because it allows us to figure out where the person's attention is focused.

However, Peterson and Eckstein hypothesize that, despite the ever-so-brief -- 250 millisecond -- glance, the relatively featureless point of focus, and the fact that we're usually unaware that we're doing it, the brain is actually using sophisticated computations to plan an eye movement that ensures the highest accuracy in tasks that are evolutionarily important in determining flight, fight, or love at first sight.

"When you look at a scene, or at a person's face, you're not just using information right in front of you," said Peterson. The place where one's glance is aimed is the place that corresponds to the highest resolution in the eye -- the fovea, a slight depression in the retina at the back of the eye -- while regions surrounding the foveal area -- the periphery -- allow access to less spatial detail.

However, according to Peterson, at a conversational distance, faces tend to span a larger area of the visual field. There is information to be gleaned, not just from the face's eyes, but also from features like the nose or the mouth. But when participants were directed to try to determine the identity, gender, and emotion of people in the photos by looking elsewhere -- the forehead, the mouth, for instance -- they did not perform as well as they would have by looking close to the eyes.

Using a sophisticated algorithm, which mimics the varying spatial detail of human processing across the visual field and integrates all information to make decisions, allowed Peterson and Eckstein to predict what would be the best place within the faces to look for each of these perceptual tasks. They found that these predicted places varied moderately across tasks, and closely corresponded to where humans actually do look.

At least for the three important tasks investigated -- identity, emotion, and gender -- below the eyes is the optimal place to look, say the scientists, because it allows one to read information from as many features of the face as possible.

"What the visual system is adept at doing is taking all those pieces of information from your face and combining them in a statistical manner to make a judgment about whatever task you're doing," said Eckstein. The area around the eyes contains minute bits of important information, which require the high resolution processing close to the fovea, whereas features like the mouth are larger and can be read without a direct gaze.

The study shows that the ability to learn optimal rapid eye movement for evolutionarily important perceptual tasks is inherent in humans; however, say the scientists, it is not necessarily consistent behavior for everybody. Eckstein's lab is currently involved in studying a small subset of people who do not look just below the eyes to identify a person. Other researchers have shown that East Asians, for instance, tend look lower on the face when identifying a person's face.

The research by Peterson and Eckstein has resulted in sophisticated new algorithms to model optimal gaze patterns when looking at faces. The algorithms could potentially be used to provide insight into conditions like schizophrenia and autism, which are associated with uncommon gaze patterns, or prosopagnosia -- an inability to recognize someone by his or her face.

US, Russia name crew for yearlong space mission

(AP) ? NASA and Russia's Roscosmos have named the two men who will spend a year aboard the International Space Station to gather more data about the effects of weightlessness on humans.

NASA's Scott Kelly and Roscosmos' Mikhail Kornienko will take part in the mission set to start in spring 2015. The space agencies said in a statement Monday that the flight would help reduce health risks for planned NASA missions around the moon, an asteroid and ultimately Mars.

Crews so far have done only six-month stints on the station.

William Gerstenmaier, NASA's associate administrator, said the mission "will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit."

Kelly and Kornienko will start training for the mission next year.

Troika Entertainment?s zesty national tour of the 2011 Tony Award nominated Broadway musical Catch Me If You Can ? which Broadway Series South and the North Carolina Theatre have jointly brought to Raleigh Memorial Auditorium for eight performances from Nov. 6th to Nov. 11th ? is a nimble and lighthearted romp through key episodes from the life and crimes of infamous teenage con man and forger Frank William Abagnale, Jr. ? all staged as a 1960s-style television variety show, with a lively script by Terrence McNally and a buoyant score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The visually striking contributions of scenic designer David Rockwell, lighting designer Kenneth Posner, and costume designer William Ivey Long underscore the variety-show format; and brisk musical staging by director Jack O?Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell heightens the show?s hilarity.

Recent college graduate Stephen Anthony plays Frank W. Abagnale, Jr. as a lovable scamp, who ran away from his divorcing parents? soon-to-be-broken home at age 16 and commenced a life of crime to keep from being returned to live with one of them. Abagnale started out as a penniless high school kid with the gift of gab, but quickly learned how to lie convincingly. Indeed, Abagnale estimates that he passed more than $2.5 million in bad checks in 26 countries before his arrest and imprisonment in France, Sweden, and the United States, for a total of approximately five years, at age 21.

Stephen Anthony?s personable Frank W. Abagnale, Jr. is the perfect foil for Merritt David Janes, who creates a prickly portrait of FBI agent Carl Hanratty, who is hot on Abagnale?s trail and ? in Les Mis?rables terms ? plays the implacable Inspector Javert to Abagnale?s Jean Valjean.

Aubrey Mae Davis adds a charming characterization of Abagnale?s fianc?e, Atlanta, GA nurse Brenda Strong; and D. Scott Withers and Amy Burgmaier hover nervously over the happy couple as Brenda?s aristocratic Old South parents Roger and Carol Strong. Caitlin Maloney and especially Dominic Fortuna add a note of melodrama as Frank?s bickering mother and father Paula Abagnale and the original Smooth Operator, Frank Abagnale, Sr.; and Travis Mitchell, Ben Laxton, and Derrick Parks are amusing as stumbling, bumbling, fumbling FBI Agents Branton, Dollar, and Cod. Crime has never been so much fun.

Fat Cells Hold Ray of Hope for Diabetes - Childhood Obesity News

Glucose and Insulin Flow in the Body

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) announced that fat cells might prevent diabetes, which sounds totally counter-intuitive. But, in the human body, the balance of blood sugar and insulin is partly controlled by the fat cells. Medical News Today says:

To do this crucial job, fat cells need a small portion of the sugars derived from food. Obesity often reduces the dedicated sugar transport molecules on fat cells, blocking the glucose from entering fat cells. As a result, the whole body becomes insulin resistant, and blood sugar rises, leading to diabetes.

The article interprets for online readers how the study demonstrated the importance of glucose to fat cells. The researchers are said to have discovered a ?new version? of a gene inside fat cells. Harvard University?s Barbara Kahn, M.D., the senior author of the BIDMC study, indicated that this one gene can make a lab animal either more vulnerable to diabetes, or somehow protect the animal from diabetes.

This builds on Dr. Kahn?s discovery, more than a decade ago, that ?fat cells are a master regulator of healthy levels of glucose and insulin in mice and require sugar.? She is quoted as saying:

Two things were surprising ? first, that a lone gene could shift the metabolism of the fat cell so dramatically and then, that turning on this master switch selectively in adipose tissue is beneficial to the whole body.

The way the journalist explains it, apparently this newly identified gene ?may account for the protective effect of glucose uptake in human fat.? It was already known that the glucose metabolism in fat cells makes a big difference, but now the exact reason seems to be clear.

If fat cells can?t soak up their ration of glucose properly, this can be an early sign that diabetes looms on the horizon. Apparently, the gene senses glucose and causes it to convert into fatty acids. If the glucose level goes up, even more fatty acids are produced, and if this occurs inside the liver, the person winds up with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Fat cells generally need about 10% of the sugars that enter the system. So that definitely does not mean that anyone needs to eat more sugar. The body is perfectly capable of deriving it from healthful foods.

The study?s first author, Mark Herman, M.D., is also quoted:

The general concept of fat as all bad is not true. Obesity is commonly associated with metabolic dysfunction that puts people at higher risk for diabetes, stroke and heart disease, but there is a large percentage of obese people who are metabolically healthy.

At the Kern Lipid Conference this summer, Dr. Kahn delivered a lecture titled, ?Novel mechanisms by which adipose tissue regulates systemic insulin sensitivity and risk for diabetes.? Further research in this area could explain why some obese people are not at risk for diabetes, and also lead to a new ability to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes, as well as the other metabolic disorders often associated with obesity. Counter-intuitive or not, the findings will doubtless inspire many more questions.

Your responses and feedback are welcome!

Anger as debt-hit borough plans to sell $32M artwork

Bethany Clarke / Getty Images file

'Draped Seated Woman' by Henry Moore was sold to one of London's borough councils at a knock-down price in 1962 on the understanding it would be displayed in the area, which was notorious for its social deprivation and which had also been heavily bombed during the Second World War. It is currently displayed at a sculpture park in Yorkshire.

By Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

LONDON ? A debt-stricken district of London is to sell a sculpture gifted to the local area by celebrated artist Henry Moore, prompting fierce criticism and raising questions over the future of other publicly owned artworks amid austerity cuts.

The mayor of Tower Hamlets ? one of the poorest areas of Britain ? decided late Wednesday to sell the 8-foot Henry Moore bronze statue "Draped Seated Woman" as the borough council tries to cut a deficit of $144 million.

It is thought the sale of the sculpture could raise up to $32 million for the council. Independent mayor Lutfur Rahman over-ruled the concerns of a committee of politicians to order the artwork be auctioned to the highest bidder.

Ian Leith, founder and deputy chairman of the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association,?told the U.K.?s Guardian that the high-profile decision means other towns and cities might now be tempted to see artworks simply as financial assets.

"We fear that this is the beginning of local authorities wanting to realize the assets they have in their public sculptures," he told the newspaper. "But the danger is that we won't find out about these sales: There is no national audit of public art in England and no at-risk list.?

In the United States, at least four cities have declared bankruptcy as they struggle to make budget cuts.

Read more coverage of this story at ITV News

Among those criticizing the London decision was Danny Boyle, the "Slumdog Millionaire" film director and choreographer of the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, who is also a resident in the east London borough.

Boyle told the Daily Telegraph: "The Moore sculpture defies all prejudice in people's minds about one of London's poorest boroughs. That alone makes it priceless to every resident."

Moore, who died in 1986, sold his sculpture to the council in 1962 at a knock-down price on the understanding it would be displayed in the local area, which was notorious for its social deprivation and which had also been heavily bombed during the Second World War.?It sat in a public housing project in Stepney Green until 1997 when the project was demolished and it was loaned to a sculpture park in Yorkshire.

'Not insurable'
Heather Bonfield, the council?s interim head of culture, told a meeting on Wednesday night that displaying the sculpture in public parks in the area was no longer feasible because of the risk of vandalism and metal theft, making it "not insurable", according to a report in The Wharf?local newspaper.

Tower Hamlets councilor Shahed Ali told ITV News the cash raised would be used for "services for local people, services that will make as big difference to our local residents."

"We have youth population that is the largest in Europe and the money will help address those needs," he said.

/

A diverse community in East London will welcome the world to Britain for the 2012 Olympic Games. Meet residents and hear how they feel about having a huge, world stage in their backyard.

Tower Hamlets was one of the six boroughs adjacent to the Olympic Park, which transformed a derelict former industrial wasteland in east London into the epicenter of the 2012 Summer Games.

Sharon Ament, director of the?Museum?of London?Docklands which is in the borough, proposed a plan to host the statue ? but her offer was rejected.

"We are hugely disappointed," she told ITV News. "Just because we?re going through really tough times financially, it doesn?t mean to say that the cultural, artistic and spiritual needs of the population shouldn?t be met."

Local member of parliament, Rushanara Ali, told the East London Advertiser: "The sculpture belongs to the people of the East End and should remain in public ownership and be available for everyone to enjoy as Henry Moore intended it.

"This is a betrayal of the East End?s working class heritage. The sale will only make a small contribution to the council?s budget."

In Sunday?s Observer newspaper, commentator and local resident Rowan Moore wrote: "'Draped Seated Woman' fulfills an ideal that nothing was too good for ordinary people, an ideal that modern local politicians are in danger of losing. To sell the sculpture as if it were a piece of real estate would ? betray Moore?s generosity. It would raise the question why anyone should ever want to offer anything to a local authority again."

Local journalist and blogger Ted Jeory told NBC News the decision to sell the statue in order to keep funding for current local projects was?a "vote-buying program" by Mayor Rahman, who is up for re-election in 18 months.?"This is not about government cuts, it?s about his love of power," he said.

Analysis: Gay marriage votes could sway Supreme Court

NEW YORK (Reuters) - After victories for same-sex marriage initiatives in Maryland, Maine and Washington state this week, the two sides in the national debate over gay marriage are positioning for advantage as the issue moves toward the U.S. Supreme Court.

The votes came two weeks before the Supreme Court justices are to meet, on November 20, to decide whether to review six gay rights cases that have been brought before the court.

Four of the cases test the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA, which bars the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in states or foreign countries where they are allowed. Another seeks approval for Proposition 8, a 2008 measure that outlawed same-sex marriage in California. The sixth case concerns gay rights in Arizona.

A critical question for the Supreme Court is how much political clout gays and lesbians have - and that's where Tuesday's votes could come into play.

Under the legal analysis that applies to equal protection challenges, laws that discriminate against politically powerless groups receive greater scrutiny from the court. Some of the lower courts in the current cases found that gays and lesbians are a disadvantaged group that qualifies for more rigorous protection.

Opponents of same-sex marriage are now arguing that Tuesday's voting results, which brought to nine the number of states that allow same-sex couples to wed, show that gays and lesbians have plenty of political power.

Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, said this argument may appeal to Justice Anthony Kennedy, often the swing vote between the court's liberal and conservative camps.

"Kennedy will look at this and think, why create a new culture war and bypass the democratic process to impose gay marriage on the country when this is being worked out on a state-by-state basis?" Brown said.

Finding either the Defense of Marriage Act or California's Proposition 8 unconstitutional would be the equivalent of imposing gay marriage on the populace, Brown said.

But lawyers who have challenged DOMA say Tuesday's ballots could have the opposite effect, helping to convince the justices that gay marriage's time has come.

Historically, the Supreme Court has provided a single national framework on social issues like same-sex marriage, said James Essex, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union. But it generally does so only after much of the country has reached a consensus, said Essex, who helped bring one of the challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act.

In 1967 the court ruled that Virginia could no longer ban interracial marriage, reversing a ruling that had stood since 1883, after several states repealed their anti-miscegenation laws. And in 2003 the court found that Texas could not ban sodomy, noting that the number of states with laws banning homosexual conduct had dropped from 25 to 13 since it had made the opposite finding in 1986.

"Every time it becomes clear marriage equality is more accepted and popular, that helps us in the Supreme Court in some hard-to-quantify way," said Paul Smith, another lawyer who represents people who are challenging the Defense of Marriage Act.

Supporters of gay rights and some academics also note that more than 30 states have passed laws prohibiting same-sex marriage, which they say shows that gays and lesbians still need special protection from the courts.

"The test for whether the court applies extra careful review does not hinge on whether a few ballot measures pass in favor of gay people's equality," said Suzanne Goldberg, a professor at Columbia Law School. Rather, it's a much more far-reaching inquiry into systemic discrimination and underrepresentation, she said.

One thing everyone seems to agree on is that the Supreme Court is almost certain to take up at least one of the Defense of Marriage Act cases before it.

Federal appeals courts in New York and Massachusetts have already found the 1996 federal law unconstitutional, putting pressure on the Supreme Court to create a national standard.

"The court can't live in a world where the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional in the Northeast and constitutional everywhere else," the ACLU's Essex said.

This is especially true after Tuesday's votes, because with more states allowing same-sex marriage, more people are potentially adversely affected by the Defense of Marriage Act, said Arthur Leonard, a professor at New York Law School.

"It becomes much more urgent to get an answer whether the federal government can continue to refuse to recognize same-sex marriage," he said.

Legal experts said Tuesday's ballot results were unlikely to influence the Supreme Court's actions as it deliberates on whether to review Proposition 8, California's ban on gay marriage. While voters in the three states on Tuesday voted to approve gay marriage, California voters took the exact opposite action when they approved Proposition 8 just four years ago.
