Limit of only 3 pets (of each type) in MOP.

It is pretty unclear in that Blue post. As I understood it from previous ones, though, pets over the limit of 3 would be "caged" and put into your inventory. However, I do remember recently hearing about a bug with caging.

So, ultimately... I'm unsure, but if they ARE going to be deleted, that is a new change.

Unlearned pets should not change. If you have, for example, 6 Dark Whelpings in your bank (but not learned on any of your characters), those will stay just the way they are.

Deadly shooting near the Empire State building

A gunman shot multiple people near the Empire State Building in the Midtown area of Manhattan on Friday morning, according to several news reports.

New York City's ABC 7 reported that the shooting occurred at Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street around 9 a.m. ET. The New York Post reported that 10 people were shot, and two of those people?including the shooter?died. The incident, the Post said, was the result of a co-worker dispute.

The Associated Press and others reported that police shot and killed the gunman near the tourist entrance of the Empire State Building. Reuters reports that two people have died. The Post said that the fatalities include the gunman and a bystander.

Word of the shooting spread rapidly on social media networks.

"On 5th avenue surrounded by helicopters and police," @CeciliaHalling wrote on Twitter. "I'm very glad I wasn't 20 blocks further down half an hour ago."

The number of fatalities has not been made official.

Police have cordoned off a one block perimeter around the Empire State Building. Around 10 a.m., there was a lone tourist bus still driving down Fifth Avenue, and a guide could be heard over the bus's mic explaining they were nearing the landmark. As police waved the bus to detour down 36th street, the guide was openly mystified. "I don't know what's going on, folks," he said, as the bus turned. By then the bus's passengers were looking up at the sky at a news helicopter floating overhead. Some stood, clutching their cameras.

Along 35th street, hundreds of people stood photographing the scene with iPhones and iPads. Officers could be seen standing in the middle of 34th street around a scene surrounded by police tape. Television producers roamed the crowd looking for guests. "Was anybody here when this happened? Was anybody here when this happened?" one NBC producer yelled.

Eyewitnesses told CNN that the gunman was using a rifle or shotgun.

Traffic was diverted around the Empire State Building as investigators responded to the scene.

We'll update this story as more details are known.

South Africa mourns as efforts to save Solly the hippo fail

Solly
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa?-- It was supposed to be one be of those feel-good stories that make a nation smile after a couple of weeks of pretty rotten news here in South Africa.

But the oddball tale of a young hippo who got trapped in a swimming pool turned into into a tragedy ? broadcast live on television Friday.

The young male hippo, who had become a South African celebrity and even inspired someone to start up a Twitter account in his name, died just as a vet arrived and a crane was brought in to rescue him.

He had been forced out of his pod by dominant male hippos in a game reserve in northern South Africa?s Limpopo province and had wandered into a swimming pool, more than six feet deep, without steps, at a game lodge.

With no way to get out of the pool, the hippo, nicknamed Solly, was trapped.

Plans were drawn up to save Solly, and media gathered around the pool. The idea was to sedate the hippo and winch the one-ton animal out of the pool using a crane, blindfold him, put him on a truck and take him to safety.

It was always going to be a long shot.

Even darting the animal was risky. The Star newspaper reported that Solly had only a one in three chance of surviving the sedation.

But before he could be darted, the swimming pool had to be emptied to prevent him from drowning.

Then the vet who was supposed to tranquilize Solly got waylaid, attending to a pregnant antelope struggling to give birth.

Wildlife rescue experts and supporters tried to pour water on the hippo to keep him hydrated, but the animal became distressed Friday morning, and died before he could be rescued.

The safari lodge manager, Ruby Ferreira, was heartbroken by Solly?s death.

?We've been waiting all morning. I'm very heartbroken at the loss of Solly,? Ferreira told a local television news station.

?It started out as a happy story and now it's a tragic story. It's devastating,? she told the Associated Press.

Hippos driven from their pods often die because of stress, according to wildlife rescue expert Simon Prinsloo, who was in tears over the hippo?s death, the AP reported.

Why novelists need scientists, and vice versa

Mairi Macleod, contributor

?My ignorance about science is a very liberating thing,? says Sophie McKenzie, prolific writer of teen fiction. ?I never think, ?That can?t be done?.?

You?d think that this statement from McKenzie, the author of two series of novels with a genetics theme, would inflame the scientist sitting to her left. But Alistair Elfick, who works in synthetic biology and genetic engineering at the University of Edinburgh, UK, and was a fellow panellist at this week?s "The Scientist in Fiction" discussion at the Edinburgh Book Festival, was full of praise for literature and film that spreads the word about science.

?Work like Sophie?s gives us a forum to start thinking about how genetic engineering and cloning may impact on different versions of the future?, he says.

McKenzie?s first book, Blood Ties, is about two teenagers who discover they are clones of other people. Her interest was in the emotional consequences for the characters, rather than the process itself. She turned to discussion forums where scientists were debating the ethics of creating clones of human beings and discovered this an excellent source of material: ?One guy said, ?What?s it going to be like for kids growing up knowing that they?ve been created as a copy of another person??? She asked herself: "Why would people do that? To replace a dead child? Your son or daughter dies, say as a teenager, and maybe you?re too old to have more children naturally. Why wouldn?t you clone that dead child and create a new child that will look very similar to the one that you lost?"

Fiction has another effect too, says Elfick: it can inspire scientists about the future. As McKenzie reminded us, no one took much notice of the mobile telephony that was all the rage in Star Trek in the 1960s, but how ahead of its time was that?

So how do fiction writers and film-makers find out about science and scientists? McKenzie made sure she did her homework for her books. When she was writing The Medusa Project series, which follows a group of teenagers who were implanted at birth with a gene for psychic abilities, she asked a scientist; ?How do I get a gene into an unborn child?? And she was told, ?Wrap it in a virus.? So she did.

It?s not just the ins and outs of science that need to be researched. David Kirby, who was chairing the panel, is a senior lecturer in science communication at the University of Manchester and the author of Lab Coats in Hollywood, which documents scientists working in the movie business trying to teach actors how to behave like a scientist.

He recounted how one palaeontologist at the Smithsonian Institute, the world?s leading expert on iguanodons, was approached by the producers of the film Jurassic Park. Excited, the palaeontologist thought they wanted to consult him on iguanodons. Instead, they talked for three hours without even mentioning these duck-billed dinosaurs - they just asked him about how paleontologists behave in different situations. ?As a palaeontologist, if you walked around a corner and saw a T. rex, what would you do?? Perhaps unsurprisingly, the scientist replied that rather than get out his notebook, ?I would do what you would do: drop a load in my trousers and faint!?

That kind of realism might be at odds with some famous characters we?re familiar with in fiction - take Victor Frankenstein, for example, or the larger-than-life archaeologist Indiana Jones. But, as Kirby pointed out, scientists are just people like everyone else, who pay the bills, worry about their kids and have to take the dog for a walk. Nevertheless, there is one crucial difference between scientists and the rest of humanity, he says: the motivation to do science. And in his Hollywood world, that?s what actors playing scientists want to know about - what motivates scientists to sit in the lab all day, to do the endless graft, to meet with the frustration and failure in search of the truth.

He related another story, this time about the celebrity scientist Brian Cox, who worked on the movie Sunshine, which is about a mission to restart the sun. The film?s actors wanted to know what made him a scientist, and one of the things about this film was figuring out what would motivate a scientist to go on what was essentially a suicide mission. Cox told them that nature is more beautiful than anyone can possibly imagine, and what he loves about doing science is experiencing the unknown and then finding an explanation for it, and that?s what would motivate him to do that sort of scientific work.

If fiction, in the form of books, film, TV or whatever, can get that sort of sentiment across, then I reckon it can?t fail to motivate us to get excited by science.

Apple posts OS X 10.8.1 update, mends your Mountain Lion

Apple posts OS X 108, mends your Mountain Lion

There's a special moment in every operating system's life when it loses its innocent .0 status and grows up. It's OS X Mountain Lion's turn to mature, as Apple has just pushed out the 10.8.1 update for early adopters. Most of the fixes are for issues that plague specific use cases, such as audio output from a Thunderbolt Display or crashes in Migration Assistant. There are a few remedies that a wider audience might appreciate -- a fix for iMessages that don't send and an improvement to Exchange compatibility in Mail, for example. We don't yet know of any surprises lurking underneath, but it can't hurt to have a smoother-running Mac while we investigate.
