Last year, Romacaca rattled off five straight wins, including four stakes races. This year, however, she's had a mixed bag of results and will try for her first stakes win of 2012 today in the $200,000 Modesty Handicap at Arlington Park near Chicago.
The 6-year-old daughter of Running Stag is the 5-2 favorite in the Grade 3, 1 3/16-mile turf race. The race drew eight entries and is scheduled for 4:41 p.m.
Romacaca's only win this year came in an allowance race in April after dropping her first two stakes tries of the year. She finished fifth in the Grade 2 Honey Fox Stakes in March and second in the Florida Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Stakes in January.
She finished fourth in her last start in the Violet Stakes (G3) at Monmouth Park in May.
Bred in Florida by Cashel Stud, she is owned by Frank Carl Calabrese. Romacaca has earned more than $680,000 in her career
The second choice in the race is Bizzy Caroline, who enters the race off a win in the Early Times Mint Julep Handicap (G3) at Churchill Downs in June. She also won the Grade 3 Regret Stakes at Churchill last June.
The 4-year-old daughter of Florida-bred stallion Afleet Alex, is at odds of 3-1 in the Modesty. She has earned nearly $300,000 in her career.
In New Jersey, two Florida-breds are among the top choices in the $100,000 Jersey Shore Stakes today at Monmouth Park.
Cape Cod Canal, and Wildcat Creek are the co-second choices at odds of 5-2. The Jersey Shore is a Grade 3, 6-furlong dirt race scheduled for 5:17 p.m.
Cape Cod Canal is a 3-year-old, gelded son of Journeyman Stud stallion Wildcat Heir. He has raced twice, winning a maiden special weight race in June at Monmouth. He won that race by 8 1/2 lengths.
The gelding was bred by his owner, Patricia Generazio. He breaks from the outside No. 6 post.
Wildcat Creek is another 3-year-old son of Wildcat Heir, and has 10 starts to his career. He has not won a stakes race, but has finished second in the Inaugural and Pasco stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.
He won his last time out, an allowance race at Monmouth Park in June.
The colt was bred by Hardacre Farm LLC. He sold for $77,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales 2010 selected yearling sale. He is owned by BNB Racing Inc. and Rick Shanley and has earned more than $106,000 in his career.
Isn't He Clever, a 3-year-old son of Smarty Jones, is the 2-1 favorite. The colt's last win came in the Borderland Derby at Sunland Park in February. He finished second in the Sunland Derby (G3) in March.
