Boulder, Colo. The Geological Society of America (GSA) is pleased to announce a joint scientific meeting hosted in partnership with the Geological Society of China (GSC), to be held 17-19 June 2013 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. The societies were brought together in their first cooperative effort by the GSA International Section, with the aim of encouraging greater collaboration in understanding and education of the scientific, professional and technical aspects of the Earth Sciences.

Roof of the World focuses on the evolving Himalayan-Tibet orogen and low-T environmental geochemistry. Topics include:

  • Evolution of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
  • Intra-continental deformation, mineral resources and geologic hazards
  • Environmental changes, biologic evolution, geochemistry and carbon sequestration

The three-day conference will be conducted in English and will include post-meeting field trips exploring the tectonic framework of the region and unique sites for the end-of-Permian mass extinctions. Meeting organizers include the Geological Society of China, the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS), the Department of Land and Resources of Sichuan Province, China, and Chengdu University of Science and Technology.
