KidSport Initiative sees 13,000 kids join sports and recreation clubs ...

The KidSport Initiative, run by the Western Australian government?s Department of Sports and Recreation and local governments, has announced that the number of children to join sports and recreation clubs throughout the state has now reached 13,000.

Almost half of that number have never been involved with a club before, which has proven one of the most pleasing elements of the campaign?s success for Minister of Sports and Recreation Terry Waldron.

Minister Waldron expressed his delight at the news, explaining that, ?not only are these children learning new skills, they will be making new friends and gaining all the benefits that active participation in sport and recreation brings.

?We know that sport is a lot of fun, but we also know that kids? participation in sport gives them a better chance of performing well at school, as well as being physically and mentally healthier.?

The KidSport initiative allows families to recieve subsidies of up to $200 for club fees every year for children aged between five and 18, and to date has seen 120 local governments in Western Australia actively participate in the initiative to help deliver the program to as many as possible throughout the state.

The towns and suburbs where the most kids have accessed KidSport are Albany, Armadale, Busselton, Gosnells and Esperance.
